I just signed up for the forum and thought I would start things off with a post that some of you, I'm sure, are going to take with a 10 lb. bag of salt and the possible odor of recycled grass from a horse farm. I finally took the flint out of my .58 Fusil yesterday, after keeping track of the number of shots it had fired. The unbelieveable total ended up at 254 shots. I had knapped it about 5 times and it was wider than it was long. The best I usually get is in the neighborhood of 50 or so. I have another from the same batch in my .40 that is up to 70 shots and still has life left. The locks on both guns are well tuned left hand large Silers.

Well now, I know one can ALWAYS take a fellow flinter at his word. 254 shots on the same flint? That has to be a world's record. I think I'd like a few spalls offen that rock if you ever find a way to clone it.

Welcome to the forum, and hats off to you. If I shoot more than 60 rounds in one sitting , I usually get bored with not shoot something alive. :p

I take it, that you were using British napped flints.

Well, now we know where your forum name comes from... SUPERFLINT...

There is no reason a properly knapped flint won't last, unless there is hidded faults in the rock, itself...

Let's see that flint gave you a 254:1 ratio over a percussion cap... ::

Superflint-

Congratulations! Heck of an acheivement. I used to shoot with club. In that club was a guy that didn't care too much about the scores and awards and such. He concidered it a perfect year if he shot the entire year with the same flint. Me thinks that you may have outdone him! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I forgot to mention, it is a black English flint from October Country, made by Tom Fuller of Merry Olde England.

I use 3/4" Tom Fuller flints from October Country...had the good luck to get 87 out of one back in March before I tossed it, and thought 87 was great...but 254 is really something! :shocking:

Here's the scoop on Tom Fuller:

TOM FULLER.
I have been knapping top quality English gunflints for approximately 26 years. I hand knap gunflints using the traditional tools of our forefathers. I quarter, flake and hand knap using traditional and hand tools. I am the largest producer of hand knapped gunflints in the world today producing approximately 300,000 to 400,000 flints per year selling worldwide.
