Gentlemen,
I am getting a new gunsafe made, and seeing that my interests lie in the direction of the fusil de grenadier, long land model etc., would any of you gentlemen with 42 inch plus barrels be able to tell me the OVERALL length of your pieces? I will be purchasing from TOTW, TRS, Jim Chambers etc... but I need to tell the safe builder NOW how big to make it, as alterations LATER could be difficult :)
Thanks in advance

Benvenuto , Fusil with 42" bbl , over all length 58" . Early style rifle with 42" barrel (x3) , over all length 60" . Hope this helps and greetings from Wisconsin .

I once measured approximately 60 Kentucky rifles using the measurements from Shumway's RCA.The average length of the gun from the rear of the barrel{including the tang } was about 15" give or take a half inch or so.Thus a gun with a 40" barrel would be about 55" overall.Since there are guns with barrels of 45-55" for a possible overall length of 70-72"+/- I would go with a safe with an inside measurement of 72" high.Anything longer may require dissasembly.
Good Luck

Thankyou one and all!
I was going to go for 70 inches with a separate ammo compartment in the top (leaving 63 inches clear space), but I may ask him to make the ammo compartment smaller so i can sneak a longer barrel up the back of the safe if I decide to get myself a "fusil de boucanier" one day :)

you may just want to consider side compartments for your ammo. :v

Benvenuto,
What everyone has said makes good sense. 58"/60" clear inside should fit most anything available. Then you get the one that defies logic. I have a fowler that is 89" long.
Mark :)

hehe yes, there are several L-O-N-G barrel fans here, I've seen the photos
