Primative firearms season begins today in PA. And yes, I am at home waiting patiently for the early afternon. It has been raining since this time yesterday and I don't expect them to be on the move until later today. A gripe - if you will allow. I can not figure out why the primative firearm season in this state begins when the weather is normally at its worst. Typicaly it is cold, windy, snowy and altogether miserable here at this time of year. And this is when us "primative" type hunters have a season for us. The other regulations stay the same BTW. The much wondered at 3 points on a side rule to qualify a legal buck and such. Without a scope and at this time of year when most of the bucks have been taken by archers (I will include the crossbow folks in this) and in-line shoters and high power shoters. I just think that the primative firearms season in PA should be moved forward and that if anything else, - the firearms and in-line types should be permitteed afild when primative is now slated. I will now make final prepairations for this afternon and tomorrow.

I personally like the timing of PA's primitive season. How perfect to be afield at such a tranquil time of year....getting back to the ways of our forefathers. For me, it's not about getting a deer this time of year....but rather reviving the spirit of the wild in all of us.

if PA does this then it's just gonna be just another 3 week rifle season with alot more yahoo's running around trying to just kill another deer before all seasons are closed till next year, IMHO....the primitive season was made fer just that PRIMITIVE ARMS....i'm glad they made it flintlock only :hatsoff: ....to many people on a pa forum are complaining that there are to few deer as it is already....but they are the ones shooting them all, go fig :shake: ....they already have a week long anything goes muzzle loading season in oct just 3 weeks into bow season when small game seasons open up too....so ugh-liners and rifle shooters have the same 3 week long season as we flinters do, and i hope PA stays smart enough to keep it that way :v ..............bob

Bob,
I'm from PA and I like it just the way it is as well. I hope they never change anything about it. It's perfect already. I like it best when it's snowing like mad and I am sure within the 3 week season there will be a period that it does just that.

I agree. Plus, if they moved the season to Oct., you'd probably forced to wear orange.

Well, I am outvoted by my colleagues and as such surender. But - for the record ther ain't no such thing as as an anything goes season for deer in this state at any time and for any length of time. ALL bucks must have at least 3 points on a single side to be a legal deer always. BTW - got back from the first day of primitaive and had a heck of a good time. Going again tomorow, so what does that tell ya??

Be thankful you have a primative hunt. Here in Minnesota we have a muzzleloader season. That means if it loads from the muzzle it legal. That means we get modern type too. :(

Just be happy uou have a primitive season , Some of us New Yorkers would love to have a season to go and play , The weather this time of year just makes the hunt more appreciative. So be carefull for what you wish for .

When we first lobbied for a traditional flintlock season in the early 70s, we were up against the very influential archery lobby that wanted no competition in the early season in October, and the majority rifle hunters who did not want another special season that included bucks before the December rifle season. The result was a late season after the archers and high powered rifles had had their chance. The primitive season was also set so as to occur after what was then a 2 day doe season in mid December. The result was that we got a late season after all the other hunting interests had been taken care of. That put our season in the dead of winter, with an already normal kill on legal buck. In the beginning few years, we were even restricted to hunting specified game lands only. There was no state wide hunting for flintlocks as there is today. I had to drive about 50 miles to the nearest gamelands that was open for flintlock. Would I like to stalk deer with my flinter in the golden days of October and November, damn right I would, but it's never going to happen given our small numbers and lack of political clout with the game commission. Never the less, as has alredy been mentioned, we're blessed to have our own traditional season. Dress warm, and don't forget the hot tea.

so you have 3 weeks of rock-lock only starting today right? And you're complaining about it? :youcrazy: Here in Ohio Our ML season starts tomorrow as well, but here there is very little traditional anything involved :cursing: . sinlines are legal, a muzzleloading barrel on a Remington 870 is just fine :shake: . Oh yeah, Guess how long we get....go ahead, guess, I'll wait.

what i ment by anything goes is the ugh-line rifles can have a scope and use sabots and be ss barreled and plastic stocked and, wait i gots to go toss some cookies talking bout them things, ok i'm back :rotf: ....in oct we get a week of doe only in that muzzle loading season....but i use my flintlock in all deer seasons that's legal to do so :v ............bob

A flintlock season only in Michigan would be great, but thats not going to happen. But we can use a rocklock in the regular firearm season and lower Michigan had a 17 day muzzleloader season this year.Adds up to 33 days.
:winking: Rocky

I am from Beaver County in SW Pa. I like the season the way it is, too. Although I hunt with patched roundball, I think the commission did a good thing in allowing conical projectiles, as so many guys have guns that do best with them. One thing that I would like to see would be the use of peep sites. Lots of us are getting older and do not see open sites as well as we did when we were in our 20s, and besides, the idea of muzzleloading is one well placed shot. I draw the line at scopes, but peep sites would help put that one shot where you want it.

I hope the weather changes in your neck of the woods so you can go hunting. Our season in South Dakota runs with any muzzleloader and that includes the dreaded inline. Nonetheless, I remain with my sidelocks just for fun and challenge. No inlines for this old cat.

Hang in there and I wish you the best of luck.

Happy Holidays,
Cat9

I am from PA and like it the way it is now for flintlock season. It is much easier to get a day of vacation in flintlock season then regular rifle season.

My cuz lives in westeren PA. She loves flint season.
She grew up with me stalking moose and whitetail on the canadian and VT border so there is nothing she likes better than sneeking the MT country of PA with fresh snow during flint season.
She says she likes hunting late season in PA even better than coming out to CO and hunting elk during our sept muzzleloading season :youcrazy:
I should be getting a email from her with her kill soon. SAhe can out hunt and out hike most of my huntin' buddies back here in CO
:hatsoff:

have her sign up here at the camp if she's into muzzle loading and share some stories and knowledge :v ..............bob

Hey...enough season talk...how are you PA guys making out? I have been out twice and it has been warm which has been kinda nice. First day I spent stalking. Flushed out two deer but not an ethical shot so I let them go. Other time I didn't see any. Sure is great to be out there and I hope to get out about a dozen times over the season. What are you guys planning and experiencing?

I had a very similar first two days. Flushed 2 the first day and saw nothing the second day. Way too windy on day 2. I live in Vermont so if I get to PA. one more time I will be pleased. Boy it sure would be nice if we would get some snow.
