Have been shooting C&B pistols since the 80'' and always used a powder flask, but recently retired and wanted to try paper cartridges.

Anyway, got that part down but tried them out at the range today and 1/2 or more would not ignite and the others were a hang fire.

I've read about needing to nitrate the paper but did not do that. Do I need to nitrate or poke a hole in the bottom of the paper when I start to load them to get better results.

Thanks

You might try papers for curling irons, check with beauty shops or the local Wally mart. They are much tougher than cigarette papers and burn completely. Plus they are cheap, couple of dollars for 2000. I can get at least 2 cartridges per sheet so a box of them will last a long time.

I completely forgot about them and did use them too, had a lifetime supply back then because my wife was a cosmetologist/hairdresser and owned her own shop and they worked very well. She retired and sold the shop in 2008 so I doubt if I have any left, she used to buy most of her supplies at Sally Beauty supply.

Are you using black powder?

I use black powder and I nitrite coffee filters with spectracide stump remover. Mix it with water and soak the filters. Hang them out to dry in the sun and start rolling.
Haha love it , I also have people save their altoids tins for me and use them. Currently I have a small supply , they are great!

The mostly likely cause of failure to ignite is paper that's too heavy. Or maybe folding the bottom over resulting in multiple layers instead of cutting a circle. The reason for nitrating the paper isn't to assist ignition, it's to burn up the paper. Don't poke holes, just try different paper. Several good recommendations above. Personally, I use curling paper.

A friend of mine uses Zig-Zag brand rolling papers for his cartridges.
They work just fine with regular black powder.
Available at Dollar General and your local head shop.

Strange. I’ve used paper cartridges plenty of times and never had an issue with ignition, and I don’t make mine in a traditional fashion so mine has a twisty tail at the base. I assume when I load they get crushed and tear open.

I use American Spirits papers which are thin but strong and made of flax.

I also bought stump remover and tried nitrating but it was so messy and added to the tedium so I quit bothering. The little paper shards left in some of the chambers didn’t seem to cause any issues but I only had enough to try 3 cylinders worth. Maybe eventually a problem would show up.

I made some a couple of different ways, twisting on the bottom as well as fold over method. Gonna keep trying to see what I can find out.

You can get curling papers on E-Bay.

Pyrodex probably won't work very good in paper cartidges.

It works very well, have also used T7 with good results. If you really want to wake up your pistol try 4f in paper cartridges or by itself. Works great in .36 and .44 belt pistols. I did run 4f in a ROA and the recoil was pretty sharp.
