Parts for Investarm 50 Cal Hawken Kit

My son and I bought two percussion muzzle loader kits through Cabela's. One of the kits had some screws missing from the part kit and a hole not drilled in one of the brass parts.

I called Cabela's and they have not solved my problem. They claim not to have or be able to obtain my missing parts.

I have also sent and email to the manufacturer. I received an acknowledgment of receipt of my email, but no reply in over a month.

I'm thinking that I will just have to replace the missing wood screws. Perhaps I can get what I need at Ace Hardware or from a gun smith. I will have to drill out the brass myself.

Has anyone else had similar problems and found a source for parts to complete a Investarm kit?

I would send the kit in question back to Cabela's and tell them to..............ah, send you a kit thats complete! :grin:

You can get unplated wood screws from Muzzlebuilders Supply Company or if you're lucky, from an older hardware store.

Probably the quickest way to solve the problem is to go to a hardware store or a auto supply.

Take the lock or whatever with you so you can try the various machine screws they have on hand to find a thread that will fit properly
These will be Metric threads so don't bother with the standard threads used in America.

Once you've found the thread size that fits, look to see if it is available in a head shape that would match the original screw.
Remember, if the head is too large you can file it down by placing the screw into the chuck of an electric drill and carefully use a flat Mill file to reduce the size and reshape the head.

Missing wood screws can be replaced using standard American sized wood screws.
Speaking of wood screws, the tiny screws that some kits use to hold on the wedge escutcheons were made from brass.
The original old guns never used brass screws so by buying some steel screws you not only will be Historically Correct but you will have some screws that won't break off when you try to screw them in.

Oh. When screwing in any wood screw, coat the threads with some bar soap and put some slivers of the same soap down the pre drilled hole(s).
That will make the screws MUCH easier to screw in.

Cabelas should swap out the kit then, if you have not had it long.

I had the same thing. Had a kit here for a long time, stuck up in the rafters. Got it out, no screws..... Had absolutely no luck with Cabelas or InvestArms. :shake: Ended up I bought a screw set from Lyman for a Lyman GRH & it got me out of the mess.

I would call the Sidney store, they have a guy there that deals with this stuff (can't remember his name) but he does all of their balck powder repair stuff and he has a supply of everything to fix all. If I remember right he might work at the catalog.

If they can't help tell them to pound sand and return it and but a kit from chambers, TOW or who ever and you will have a better gun.
