Patch Box?

I’ve got a Kibler’s Woodsrunner on order and it comes with a sliding wooden patch box.

I’m super curious as to what you guys are storing in yours? Historically, what did they put in there?

Typically some amount of tow and some kind of lube like animal grease. Also possibly a worm for the tow. Depended on how much room was in there.

I store some cleaning patches and a small hand made turn screw to fit the lock screws in my Woodsrunner patch box.

Mostly the early wood boxes were tool boxes. Jags, worms, probably a little tow for cleaning, and just maybe some shooting patch material.

I use patch boxes to hold a cleaning jag, ball puller and a few cleaning patches for field maintenance. I have a buddy who's patch box is filled with pipe tobacco and a small lighter. According to him this is survival rations.

If I am being honest nothing has ever been stored in any of my various patch boxes. I guess they all for show. Literally its either in the possible bag or in range box if I need it. Now that I think of it its kind of a waste in reality but I am ok with it they look cool.

I would suspect the oldest was worm, turn screw and tow or some such maybe an extra flint
I don’t know when the term patch box came out. Old name is butt trap. The original meaning of trap being a excavated covered space, not necessarily used to trap something

It works be thicker or mixed with beeswax

Extra flint & leather, some greased patches. Other tools are in the shooting pouch.

EVERYTHING is in my bag. At one match years ago I had misplaced my capper so I put caps in the patch box and opened it to retrieve a cap at the line. Other than that I don’t use them for anything.

Personally i dislike a patch box, at this point in my life i won't buy another one that has it. Rather do without it.

A patch box to me is the same as a glove box in a car, put what suits you in it. Also a long rifle with out a patch box looks incomplete.

I agree with Phil what ever you want in it.Most of mine have nothing in them. I have one with a brass lid that has never been drilled out. They just look good.

Put whatever you want in it. Me? The only thing in mine is a vent pick. All the other foofaraw is in my shot pouch.
I don't know because I've never had a patchbox with a wooden cover. Mine are all brass. But I have been told that sometimes the wooden ones swell in damp conditions and can be difficult to open.

I keep an extra flint, cleaning jag, ball puller, and a small piece of leather for the cock jaws/flint. All wrapped in a piece of thin leather so it doesn’t rattle.
Just in case kinda
