Patch cutter

Hello, I am really getting into a lot of sighting in of my 32 and 36 rifles and having a great time of it.I am wondering if anyone has a good idea for a homemade patch cutter for these small bores as precut patches in various thicknesses are not easy to come by.They all seem to be .015 or .018 and I would like to cut my own and experiment a bit. Thanks

Buy some pillow ticking, tear it into about
1 1/4" wide strips 3-4 foot long and lube it, put a section of the strip over the muzzle, center a ball on it, start the ball to just below the muzzle and cut the patch with a sharp patch knife. :thumbsup:

I use an Arch Punch to cut my patches. Go to[url] http://www.mcmaster.com/[/url] & do a search for Arch Punch, when the page loads scroll down & you will find a wide variety of sizes. If you are happy with the diameter of the patches you are currently using just order that size, or you could go a little bigger or smaller. One way to check is to load the gun by cutting a patch at the muzzle & then, after firing, retrieve the patch & measure the diameter. You should be able to buy a punch from these folks for under $20 delivered, & they are very good quality.

a pair of scissors makes a great patch cutter. a square patch shoots just as accurate as a round patch. while sitting down watching the mountain men on tv, you can cut a few thousand in no time..

I usually cut my patches from a strip at the muzzle, but I do cut up a bunch of flannel cleaning patches and keep them in my gunning box.

My wife has one of those rolling cutters and a mat to use it on. That thing flat turns out hundreds of patches in a matter of just a few minutes. It is also EXTREMELY sharp, so don't touch the cutting wheel or you will get a razor cut...been there, done that.

If you are working up a load, just cut the patches at the muzzle. You will probably be experimenting with different patch materiel and I have found it to be easier than precutting a bunch of patches of different materiels. Once you find the right materiel then cut a bunch up if you want. I use the right sized hole saw with the teeth ground off and an edge ground in.

I use a 1 3/16" for .50 up to .58. I use a 15/16" for .32 & .36. For .62 I would try either a 1 5/8" or 1 11/16".

I use Oxyoke .60-69cal pillow ticking patches for my .62cals and they're 1+5/8"

Thanks for the diameters. As the punches increase in price dramatically beyond 1-inch, I might just use squares and cut them with the patch knife.

I have one of those paper cutters that is a wide board with grids on it fixed with a cutting arm on one side. I have cut square patches with this, but generally use cut strips and then cut the actual patch at the muzzle.

Does anyone know of an on-line vendor that sells 0.015 ticking? I have gone to my local sewing shop and the ticking was either 0.010 or 0.020. I also got the funniest looks as I calipered each of the bolts.

I cut mine mostly on the drill press. The best .015 I have found is 40 Drill Cotton Cloth ala pocket liner. This is sold by JoAnns Fabric Shops every where. :thumbsup:

Unfortunately there is only one in Alabama (Mobile) and that's about as close as Atlanta (200+ miles). I looked at their website and haven't found it yet.

If you can find any worn-out hole saws pull the pilot bit out and grind the teeth off then grind an edge on the periphery and use that in drill. stack cloth in layers to cut.

Go to Harbor Freight they have the hole saw sets for just a few bucks.
