Matter of personal preference. I keep pre-lubed ticking in a plastic bag, just like the real mountain men did, and tear a strip when I need it. I cut at the muzzle.

They did have plastic bags?! :rotf: :surrender:

What brand would be correct for the period?

Blanchette's Trading Post brand from St. Charles, Missouri.
The plastic was produced on nearby farms.

Are you sure it wasn't Nauga hide ?

Haven't seen a Nauga around the hunting lease for years. The pink ones are especially rare! Geese, think I need more "medicine"!! :rotf:

The bag in the lower left is a little deerskin pouch I soaked in melted beeswax. I keep a roll of pre-lubed mattress tick in that. (The dipped & dried Moose Juice method). I also carry loading blocks that I load up with dry ticking dragged across a wax lube (Moose Snot). I prefer those for hunting.

If you use loading blocks that are 1/8" thicker than the balls you are using they don't rub or catch on things.
