Hi all - as a relative newbie to muzzleloading, what would you recommend as a patch lubricant? I have a Pedersoli Mortimer flintlock and as of right now, am shooting pre-lubed patches with a round ball. However, being as I abhor using pre packaged stuff if I can make it myself... what do you suggest?

Colin

I'm a Ballistol user, myself. There are a zillion homemade lubes that work well though. They range from simple Crisco, to lubes you mix up. A couple years ago I mixed up every lube recipe I could find or invent. Stumpy's worked better than any of them. In the end, I went back to Ballistol. I have a lot of it and it's easy to use.

Oh joy!
its that favorite topic time again!

personly, I have settled on straight olive oil for all my perc guns with great success(for me) and I spit patch and/or do stumpy's moose juice on my trade gun, which I muzzle cut.

works for me, your milage may vary!

you'll get lots of answers for this one.
since cold temperature seems to affect the grease types and hot temps the oils I use Go-Jo white hand cleaner. just damp not dripping wet.

Thanks, y'all. I think I've got enough to start out with. Sorry if this topic has been covered before, and apparently I have still a lot to learn about this forum, as the topic has been moved. Too many sub-categories for simple minded folk like me...

Again, thank you.

I used groundhog&beeswax about 50-50, now use deer tallow. Have some bear, but save it for the matches. I like the deer as it doesn't run in hot weather. Dilly

Spit, windex, simple green or a citrus cleanser diluted with water, water pump lubricant, crisco, lard, mutton tallow is real good, and a friend swears by rendered 'coon fat, and who knows what else will work well.

About the only patch lube I have tried that I absolutely will not use again is any of the yellow miracle lubes. A lot of people like them, but they don't seem to work for me.

not a problem! we all figure things out! thats why we come here and become one big family!

I use spit, it's cheap and it's always with me. It won't work well in real cold weather though, so you may have to experiment on your own.

J.D. I never had any luck with the prepackaged lubes either, other than Hoppe's.

Colin, don't worry about this topic being covered before. It comes up a lot, and I'm glad it does. Folks who are new to this site benefit from the ideas, and the rest of us get to see all sorts of new things to try. It was a discussion just like this one a few years ago that turned me on to Ballistol, and I'm thankful for it.
