As a side note; Jo-Anns had cotton flannel on sale for about a buck fifty a yard right now. I bought 4 yards for cleaning patches the other day, cost about six bucks.

I always stock on cotton flannel when I'm there and if its on sale, I cut it 2" for my .50 cal. and a 1 1/4 to 3/8ths for my .40 cal. I'll be buying some more once I get my fowler going, anyone use a 16ga. and can tell me how big the cleaning patch should be. Pecatonica Got it to me in about 2 weeks after getting the Cherry stock blank from Dunlop Woods. Nice quick turn around  .

Luckily I've never had to waste money on material for cleaning patches...old T-Shirts and wife's flannel PJs / nightgowns have kept me well supplied for all these years...probably have more gallon size ziploc bags full of cut patches than I'll live long enough to use in 1.25", 1.75", 2", 2.5" and 3" sizes...with material still waiting to be cut.

anyone have a model # , store number ect for material for .001 ball patchs from jo ann's fabic stores so I can just go in there and buy a yard with out measuring everything in site :idunno:

Ask for muslin, it's in the ballpark. It also helps if you bring in a sample patch (I'm assuming you got some patching material already since you said you were good to go.) for comparison.

If you haven't actually fired the pistol yet, you might want to hold off buying bulk patching material until you find a thickness that works for your gun.

Yes, canvas is different than muslin is different than flannel is different than bating is different than linen print,,
But nobody is going to "feel" the difference between .012 and .015 "thickness".

What a person should feel is the difference in the weave or density of fabric. Canvas does not make a good patch,, neither does linen

I agree. My caliper always accompanies me to the fabric store.

I have a 45cal pistol and a 45 cal cleaning jag what thickness of flannel do I need for cleaning patches
I need to buy a new caliper I bought a harbor freight one and it read .01 and also 0 for the same patch that I know is .01 so it is useless

For cleaning the bores I use whatever is at hand and will fit snugly but not overly tight in the bore.

I bought some jersey that was unmarked but the saleslady said it was cotton at Walmart for $1.50 a yard clearance

I will confess to a slight trepidation the first time I went into Jo-Ann's by myself, micrometer in hand. Got what I needed, then I bought one of those rectangular cutting board thingies, then a circular cutter, then some flannel for cleaning patches, and some nice looking buttons, and a bit of velvet for a pouch that I was making.

Good thing I got out of there before I hit the sewing machine isle ... dang! those things are expensive!
