Roundball im not sure but isnt a maxiballs last band a little bigger than the ones toward the center and rear of the bullet.I aint shot any for sometime but i remember the ones i loaded took a good wap to get the end of the bullet in the bore.If that is the case the patch material would be a lot tighter there than at the rear.
I have shot pistol bullets in 45 out of a 50 with patch material and did get them to shoot.Took some pillow ticklen and another patch to keep the patch from having a hole in the center. These were copper jakets so they didnt set up like lead would.shot a goup of 4 inches at 30 yards :haha:
Presision Bullet makes 40 cal bullets for modern muzle loaders that are pure lead.Supose to shoot em with the plastic but they are a 40 cal bullet.
I have a slug of em around here some wares.Maybe you could run a file around them to rough em up on the out side some how for a little lube.some are solid lead and some are plastic tiped things.Drop me a pm with your address if your intrested.I aint gonna use em in any thing but in a 40 cal they just might work.Maybe you could trade me some of them old flints you have in a the jar.Probably be just about right for my small lock. :v
Thanks for the offer...probably won't try those...but if you'll send me a couple bucks for a padded envelope and postage, I'll give you 3 dozen used black english flints for free....they are 3/4" x 7/8" with the front edge worn down from 50-100 shots and cleaned.

Paul,

Those 135 grain bullets might work on deer. Now you are over the weight of a .45rb. :hmm:

I figuared the groves for lube would have to be put in to em.There around 250 gr which would be a pretty good walup for a 40.There may also be sum kind of alloy in them also, dont know.Whether they would stabalize in a 1 in 48 twist i dont know, if that is what round ball has.
Roundball if you have any flints that are still 1/2 inch long or maybe a hair more i would be intrested.Ive got one englsih flint left and the chert i was using chews pretty hard on a frizzen.

I have used bullets made for centerfires in my '58 Rem. and ROA with good results, course I had a lubed felt wad under. Used .45 acp lead SWC's in my '58 and .45 Long Colt lead slugs in my ROA, but I cast my own now with Lee moulds and is the best (and cheapest) I've found.
Since I have a .50 rifle I haven't used anything but PRB's and 2 of them hunting.

Question for the brain trust on this fine September morning:

Speculating for the sake of speculating about the potential of using a "patched" .36cal maxi in a .40cal rifle:

Wonder if a .020" patch would take up enough windage to get any decent accuracy out of it?

Or a .020" + a .010"
Or a pair of .020"'s?

:hmm:

(always looking for fresh reasons to go to the range on Saturdays  )

If I recall correctly, the Maxiball has three bearing bands and the top (nose) band is larger in diameter then the other two, this would give you an uneven patch hold on the bullet...

The top patched band would be much tighter than the other two, maybe enough to allow it to move off it's axis at the base of the bullet...

IMO this would cause yaw in the bore and continue while in flight...
