I went to the gun shop today, and they were out of the T/C lubed patches that I normally buy. I picked up some that were un lubed, how can I "mass lube" these with bore butter? :results:Also on the bag it says 45 and 50 cal, can I still use these in a 54cal? Seems like they will work with only .040" diffence in the bores. Thanks for the help. :front:

I put the dry patches in a freezer-type ziplock bag and add the borebutter(start with a teaspoon or so) and microwave for about 30 seconds or so-enough to make the BB liquid-then I just let them set till all the BB is soaked in. Depending on the amount of patches you may need to add less or more BB to get the right amount into the patches.
I would think as long as the patches make a seal around the ball when pushed down the barrel they will be OK for your .54 but I'll pass on judgement there for another more knowledgeable person can comment.

John Hinnant suggested to me that I lube my patches (Young Country Lube and ticking ) and roll em up ( I cut lengths of ticking and cut at the bore ... but no reason not to cut indy patches and do the same) ... and then put them in a mason jar .. put the jar out in my car in the Texas heat for a couple of days ... much like Sun Tea it works like a charm in a natural way! Melts the lube and soaked the patches thru just fine! A great way to do it and let nature do the work ... so far so good! ::

I called T/C today and talked with one of the gunsmiths. He told me to use a butter knife and spread the bore butter on some patches and put them on a paper plate and microwave until the butter liquifies. He also told me that their patches would work for the .54 if I was careful and put the ball dead center on the patch due to it being a little small. Should I do this or just buy some new patches? I am going to drive around 70 miles tomarrow morning to get some GOEX and a few other supplies. I think that I will pick up some larger patches while I am there.

If it was me, I would get the larger patches...

And FWIW, I always use the next size caliber patches for everything...58's in the 54...54's in the 50...50's in the 45, etc...never any question about getting a ball centered and excess patch material causes no problem whatsoever
