O.K. I have heard and read about different items for lubes, i.e bore butter, olive oil, moose juice, spit, etc. But I do'nt think I have heard or read any comments on peanut oil. I have aquired 8 oz from dept. fish fry tonight, that was not used, thought I would try it. Anyone have any thoughts if it will work.

Fish fry peanut oil will work, if you don't mind your smoke pole smelling like catfish and hush puppies!

:idunno:
It's been used.
As well as everything else from spit to axle grease.
Cat sweat,
Toad snot,
Oil of Naugha,
Possum squeezin's,
Lard,
Suet,
Bear Grease,
Deer ",
Elk ",
Transmission Fluid,
Synthetic Motor Oil,
etc, ad nauseum,,,

Several years back when I had some time to spend I tried all available "natural " oils . Olive, soybean, corn, castor, crisco, lard, sperm whale oil( I still have some from pre 1968), jaboloa bean oil, peanut oil, coconut oil,and conola oil. What I found in my limited trials was that they all worked the same when used in small amounts. So I would say go for it. The main reason I use a beeswax and lard mixture is that the beeswax is free and lard is cheap. And it makes a convienant "paste" that doesn't spill! :idunno:

There's a lot to that! I've been using a beeswax/olive oil mix on and off for years because I'm not coordinated enough to be responsible with straight olive oil. Never thought of peanut oil, but I always have that around, so why not try it too.

Good thought on the peanut oil Huntin Dawg, but if you're clumsy like me, beeswax will be your best friend!

I use peanut oil as part of my beeswax/oil mix. I make cakes about like soap bars with it and just rub onto one side of my patch cloth. It has worked well for me. It is very slickery and has a high tolerance to heat.
I don't see any advantage/disadvantge to using it straight.

"Transmission Fluid, Synthetic Motor Oil...."

Surely not these! Am pretty partial to toad snot though, but have to confess, it's a bit hard to wipe their noses with a tissue when they're hopping!

Sure, it ought to work fine as long as your smokepole likes it. Give it a try, there's nothing to loose by trying. I seriously doubt that there will be an odor problem as long as it is not used oil.

Speaking of odor problems, I once was using grits as an OP filler. We were shooting from crossed sticks and the wind was in our faces so that the smoke was blowing back toward us. You could really smell the toasted grits in the smoke. After my five shots, one of the other shooters asked me what I was shooting. I said that it was black powder with grits as a filler. He said "Damn, no wonder it was making me hungry.". :rotf: I was shooting a .45-120 BP cartridge gun so don't tell anyone that I told this story on this forum :shake: :haha:
