Can a few of you please post your experience with their grading. I am about to buy 2 stocks and wondering if I should spend the money on #5 grade when #4 is 90% to 100% curl. Will there be much of a notice? If you have pics, please post them and the grade you paid for whether it's 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. Thanks all.

A builder friend has shown me several Pecatonica stocks that he bought and all of them look better than the advertised grade--maybe just good luck? I don't know, but I think you'd be happy with their grade 4. :m2c:

here's there grade 4 maple from them that i bought fer my T/C....

This is a grade #4 for a L/H GPR I built last fall. I feel they are better than graded. Rick

nice wood! What kind of stain and finish did you use?
What was your wood finishing technique?

Flashpanner ~ Thanks for your comments. I used Aqua Fortis then boiled linseed oil. Several coats. The topcoat is LMF Permalyn. Here's a couple more pics.

Gentelmen,

I am planning my first "attempt" to build a rifle. I am very interested in the Pecatonica Tennesse Rifle Kit. After seeing this post I am sold on the wood quality. Anyone have experiance in building a gun from one of there kits? Just a little intimidated thats all!

Have used their pre-carved stocks in the past and had no problems. As with any venture such as this, take your time and do not rush your project. Patience is the key word. Be sure to read several of the how-to books that are on the market.

I have built a Tennessee Classic and it is more a collection of parts than a kit. There is a lot of work that you should consider before jumping in. The Track of the Wolf is the same stock and comprised of the same components. You might check with either vendor and ask about what needs doing, explain your skills with metal or wood working and consider what they can do for you at extra cost. If this is your first kit, you might seriously consider having some done for you.

I had trouble with getting the drum placed correctly. I had a friend that was able to assist, so it was not too bad, but it did make for an uncomfortable moment or two.

I recently built Pecatonica's "Beck Boys Rifle". I used their suggested parts in caplock to see what a customer would get, figuring on doing a magazine article on it. The parts are standard, what you would get from other suppliers. The wood and barrel inletting were good. BUT: all their "kits" have a $3.50 front sight except for fowlers (the Hawken is priced wrong), and that is a blank. This means you have to saw it out to that nice graceful shape and then file it down. I know of no good reason for getting a blank. See their catalog page 80 and order instead the top shaped one or the flower leaf design. The blank I got did not have the shoulders and the base was .062" thick. I like a thicker base. And the small Davis double set triggers did not fit in the trigger guard. Had to cut the triggers down. Would have preferred a single trigger, but I went with their parts. Got this same front sight blank from Muzzleloader Builder's Supply with her Christian Beck slim style longrifle, same stock, supplied by Pecatonica.

I built the only one I've done so far using Pecatonica's Virginia style smoothbore everything went right together..no problems with anything. Got another one on order that should be here one day. Friendship has set it back about a wk and 1/2.

Hoyt what are you getting next another smoothie or ? what maker of barrel did they send ya ?

LHunter..the one I got on order is a Buck's Co. Andrew Verner. I got a Getz octagon to round 36" .20ga. with my smoothbore. Got a Rice .54cal. rifled C profile, 38" coming with this one.

I like it..patterns better than my T/C 12ga., sidelock, percussion.. with screw in chokes.

kmeyer- I remembered wrong- (am building 5, or is it 6, rifles now and I have to draw charts to keep them straight). It is the Harpers Ferry 1803 with the $7.50 front sight that must also be a blank. And Pecatonica's blank front sight did have the shoulders. I got three front sights from Jack Garner (Tenn. Valley Mfg) which turned out to be blanks and were shoulderless. I don't need blank front sights. My kit had the CM#1 stock, their cheapest at $80 for the wood. The inletting was $47.50.
