Before I drive 2 hours to cabelas I was wondering what you all think about the ones from cabelas [you know the pressed in CABELAS name on the barrels]. Does anyone else import these and who? Also what chokes do these take? Thanks

From the Cabela's website.

"our double-barrel black power shotguns feature chrome-lined barrels for use with steel shot. The "10 and 12-gauge models use screw-in choke tubes for greater flexibility and come with one of each of the following: X-Full, modified and improved cylinder chokes. Go from doves to turkey in seconds by changing chokes and charges. The lightweight 20-gauge is an upland hunter's dream and has a fixed improved cylinder and a fixed modified choke. Deep, slick bluing, engraved locks and checkered American walnut stocks. A Cabela's exclusive from Davide Pedersoli."

The Cabelas doubles are made by Pedersoli. If you don't like the name pressed on the barrel, you can buy the same gun from a number of other sources. Dixie Gunworks and Cherry's has them. Several others do too, but I don't remember who offhand. You might be able to beat Cabelas prices by shopping around.

Plink; Thanks, I didn't think about Dixie. I check out both, it looks like Cabelas has the best price so I would have to live with the stamping. The price is not a big difference but I can hold theirs in hand before buying.
Overall the gun sounds solid unless anyone has found otherwise.
Does anyone know if the chokes tubes are interchangable with any other brands of tubes?

Doc,
I have had a pedersoli double, 12 ga, for about 10 years and really likt it. It is well made, tight and shoots and looks good. I tried one with tubes and found them to be a pain in the patooty. If you have any kind of a choke screwed in it is difficult to seat the wads. Try a fixed choke model and work up different loads for what you will be shooting; birds, bunnies, sporting clays or trap. It's a fun gun to shoot.

I have had a Pedersoli dbl 12 for a long time. It has the changeable chokes. I LIKE this percussion gun. It has harvested teal to turkey and patterns pretty well at 30 yds out of the full and modified chokes.

Even though I haven't gotten one yet. What types of loads are you using for turkeys? Powder, wad, shot size/type, ect.
I know I'll have to work up a load like I have with my other smooth bores but they all have cylinder bore.

I want one of these shotguns. After a thorough search Cabela's seems to be the cheapest. Dixie has a kit but it cost the same as Cabela's finished gun.

Sometimes when there is a price difference between two retailers it simply reflects the economics of scale. But often with imported muzzleloaders, it reflects different fit and finish specifications. Dixie may have requested better metal polishing and bluing/browning. The wood may fit better and be of a higher grade. Dixie's version may come with finer checkering, too. Without seeing the guns side by side, it's impossible to be sure...

Yes they are solid, perhaps to much! They have alot of steel in them barrels.
I think Pedersoli have come on leaps and bounds from the eighties. Mine is from the eighties and it did have issues, nothing I could not sort but later models I have had seemed better from the go.
One thing you may find is that poor ignition happens and is mainly due to Pedersoli being extremly cautious with the nipple holes but once it is opened to 1mm you'll be fine.
The stocks are pretty hardy and usually oiled now but in the past varnished of which can hide some good looking wood.

I cant speak for the 12s as mines a 10 and not a cabelas but a dixie double without the screw ins.

I have to admit I am not all that pleased at mine. That is till we had to rework triggers, rework hammer alignments, the barrels themselves are loose, the fit of metal to wood is quite sloppy. but it is the cheapest double on the market short of buying used. So I guess I shouldnt expect so much.

After a ton of powder I've found my patterns to be acceptable to some degree but still not what I was hoping for.

I'd steer clear of the screw ins from my limited experience. But dont expect this to be a heirloom high quality shooting gun either. it's nice enough, I guess you'd call a field gun at the highest end.

Good luck with yours!

replace the nipples right out of the gate with some redhots and you'll be much happier!

No this won't be an heirloom, it's going to be use fairly hard. I'm headed to Cabelas in the morning, guess I'll see what thier's are like when I get there. I see some like the choke tubes and some don't. I'm hoping they will give a tighter pattern then my cylinder bores. I know they will not load as easally.

AKDAN; What didn't you like about the screw in chokes?

Doc

I dont have them, mine is a dixie pedersoli. Was steered clear of them by more then a few for the same reason posted. Having to unscrew to load. Not a terrible problem but another headache I didnt need, and really dont want. Have a good pattern for everything, but wish it was a bit better for turkeys. mind you I dont watefowl hunt at all, though that may change. And in Alaska shooting grouse with guns would be like going on a chicken hunt at the chicken coup at feeding time. I did do a pheasant hunt with it last fall here in Mn, was hoping to do SD. It shot well once all the maylee's of the blasted thing was fixed. Hearing the cap bust and no bang more then a few times is frustrating to say the least. Having triggers that pull like Arnold Scwarzinager should be pulling it wasnt to pleasing either...and the loose barrels, well they're kind of bothersome. Again it was a new gun. Not a hand me down. I use my stuff pretty hard and this one atleast out the gate was failing miserably. Not something I'm willing to do again and to be blunt about it, not something I'd recommend someone else chance either.

Thanks for the comments guys. I picked up the double today. Very happy with it :) .
I'll see how it patterns and get back to you. I also found out this gun will take Mossberg/Win. chokes.
