Pedersoli Brown Finish

I have a flint Pedersoli Mortimer shotgun/rifle combo. The brown finish pedersoli uses scratches off like spray paint. I’ve looked extensively for a touch up to fix some scratches I’ve put in the finish. Is there such a thing? If not I’m going to strip this crap off and rust brown the barrels.

I had a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken that had the same finish, it's a form of coating/paint that is baked on at the factory (I was not happy), the guns are listed as browned. I left the scratches that I got and used some very fine wet and dry paper and feathered them , just looks like and old gun with worn spots.

I think I’m going to attempt to remove it and rust brown it. Removing the current finish might be a chore

I had the same brown finish on my Hatfield/Pedersoli barrel. I found regular distilled vinegar took it off and I scrubbed it down with vinegar and OOOO steel wool. Then lightly oiled the barrel, wiped it off, and used Van's cold gun blue scrubbed on the barrel with cotton cloth. I did not clean all if the oil off first. Kept at it a while with the Van's, then steel wool led it to an even gray-blue thin finish. Maybe not for everyone, but I liked it! Vinegar will remove Pedersoli "painted on brown" finish nicely!

Thanks for the info. Vinegar was going to be my first choice to try to remove it since it works so good on removing bluing. I’m gonna see how I like it in the white. Yours looks dang good!

I tried soaking the barrel in vinegar and using blue remover. Neither touched the finish. I guess I’ll have sand or scotchbrite it off.

I posted a reply (post #2) to this with reference to a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken, the coating is a baked on epoxy finish, burgundy color scotchbrite or wet sand works.
Some of the older Pedersoli's with brown barrel were plum brown like the Hatfield noted above, not the same at all with the newer guns finish.

This is not factual. Pedersoli cust service emailed the browning process they utilize. Its a hot chemical bath like a hot bluing process but takes a little longer. I asked about my Rocky Moutain Hawken brown.

On May 3rd this year Pedersoli replied to my email asking about the treatment on the Rocky Mtn barrels.
They stated “ The browning of the barrels is the special Cerakote product“.
Sounds like the hot blue/rust process has been discontinued.

I took the brown off my Pedersoli pistol. Definitely seems like it was cerakote, thick and consistent finish that produced a LOT of dust so wear a mask/respirator.

I cannot believe they put a finish like that on their otherwise beautiful traditional rifles.

I've found this finish to not be durable and to scratch really easily unfortunately. My Pedersoli 12 gauge double barrel has scratches on an otherwise beautiful gun because of this cheap finish they put on. It's unfortunate, but I probably won't but another Pedersoli again. They're too expensive for them to cheap out on anything imo.

I also really dislike the plasticky finish they put on their stocks, but that another issue
