I have been using a drill as a PML ( poor man's lathe ) for years . I think I use it as PML than I do as a drill .

Haha, thanks guys, it’s a very therapeutic labor of love.
Glad I got a new DeWalt lathe (drill) for Christmas. I essentially wore out a Craftsman drill as a PML (lathe)

Next up is to replace the triggerguard with a pinned version as well as install a toe plate. They are on order now. In the meantime I really enjoy making and installing inlays. I really like the “man in the moon” inlays from period rifles and drew this one up. I’m still undecided but thought I’d share my vision. Since I’m not confident at all in my carving skills I thought about putting one here instead. Maybe play around with the angles, positioning. Good, bad, indifferent? Keep it simple, leave it off?
Got the new trigger guard polished and inletted. Used the new pin drilling tool which again worked perfectly and made the job really easy. Also cut the “hook” off the back of the main trigger.
Also made a toe plate and got it installed. First time for that. Probably made it way more complicated by adding my own design instead of just a square plate but i think it turned out good and was worth the added work.

I'm enjoying following your progess even though it is something I'm not likely to do myself. I do like your man in the moon, however it seems too large. I'd shrink it about a third.

Agreed, Was thinking it needed to be a little smaller, I reduced it by 15%.
Still playing around with “IF” and where and how to place it.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement! What a wonderful and knowledgeable and talented forum this is. It has been a very rewarding journey making this my own and a great learning experience. The moon should be the last inlet, then it’s on to final shaping and sanding, then stain/seal. I’m now considering filing and sanding (defarbbing) the barrel to remove the lettering since I’ve come this far. Then rebrown it and card back like my pistol build to match or leave in the white and if I do either then I’ll have to do the lock the same as well.

More progress, replaced the factory ramrod with a hickory one and tapered it for a very smooth fit. Don’t have any tips on it yet.
