In working up a load to hunt in Africa I found that the limit was me not the gun. With 120gr of Goex any conical bullet at 600 grains of above recoiled so badly that it would cause the nerves in my shoulder so much pain that it took literally overnight before the feeling returned. It proved to be smart and stay in the 500 to 525 grain range.

This is the single best source of information regarding the Kodiak Double I’ve come across. Exceptionally great- thank you gentleman.

I just bought today the Lee 440grain .592 (Pretty sure) Mould.

Ill probably get the Bhn to around 8 ? As Wheel weight is to hard at 12.

This should be on same page as shooting a 12g Slug, or same ball park.

I’ll probably start with 90gr FFg and try to move up from there, for accuracy and Retaining position of my Shoulder where it resides now.

Does anyone have another Mould to Suggest? Something in the 500-550 range?

African game I use my 375 Weatherby mostly-
Yet I may go out to Montana with my Boss after Black Bear, Elk and They do have Grizzly (Not to Hunt) Yet I like to be prepared.

Figured I’d work on the Lee 440 Mould and see how it shoots. My Medium game PRB load of 75 gr FFg is Steller as of Now. Does Plenty of what I ask of it.

Also any suggestions on Charge weight of FFg Goex and the 440 Lee mold?

I also Have FFFg Goex and Old Ensford FFFg

I gotta imagine the 440 grain (12g Slug) with 100gr FFg Goex - Would be sufficient for many a things…… Like helping me develop a Flinch! Hahah

Edit- From what I’m reading- 8bhn is pretty soft and should be fine

The 440 grain is going to be the LEE REAL 58.
I have been shooting that bullet in all three of my 58 caliber guns.
It rocks! Lube them liberally!

Yep that’s The Lee Mould I’m literally about to use, Waiting for Lead to melt.

Ps- What lube do ya use, bore butter ok?

Oh my - NEVER do I use the evil BB..........
I use a dip lube I make using carnauba (red or blue), beeswax and olive oil.
I melt a batch in an old mink tallow tin and just dip the base, set them on a piece of parchment paper (when the wife doesn't catch me) and let them harden.
I made up a couple of bullet blocks to carry them in.

Wow- that seems involved- yet not really I guess compared to Everything else.
I definitely can make the Wood Blocks!
Thanks for the recipe

Small correction, you can use a double rifle in New York, just not in the muzzle loading season. There is nothing wrong with using a muzzle loader during the regular season.

440gr Lee at 8Bhn

90gr a good start

So Gentlemen…, Where can I aquire a Large Mould? 500+ grain. Something with a thick skirt maybe.

Not yet……. I only Powder coated a few of em to try. I’ll get to the range this week. Most likely I’ll lube em and Go traditional…. most likely

No. I set all three leaves on express sight down after lining up the Close range rear leaf…. Then just used it. It lined up with the front sight.

Yet that had been replaced by previous owner. A big white dot sight. May be taller than factory height.

Just went shooting today….Literarily drilling Bullseyes at 50 yards and close at 80 with both barrels, PRB and Real bullets to same poi with 75gr charge. Very fortunate

At the risk of causing contention, why all the fuss over recoil of two balls and heavy slugs?
My Pedersoli gets loaded with 2oz over 90gns plus all the time buts it's not to bad.
Or are you guys shooting from a bench like you would a 22?

I shot today standing. 445gr Real and FFg 75g

Powder puff load- Standing and at 80 yards I used a Shooting stick… as I was shooting for accuracy of Groups, not hunting

Shot very good at 80 yards

As stated- I would certainly agree if I hunted those large dangerous animals I’d certainly want something larger than a 58.
I dunno, Sir Samuel Baker felt that the .577 (.58) was the equal of any creature in creation (and he wasn't talking about the nitro version, it hadn't been introduced yet when he said that). Of course the .577 cartridge he was talking about was the 3", which shot a 600gr bullet with 165gr of powder to around 1650fps lol. That being said, when he hunted with a belted ball (essentially a groove-sized ball that had been run through a bore sized swage), he frequently used a 10 bore rifle for anything bigger than deer. On the other hand, he had a good friend that hinted everything in Africa with a cheap 12 bore smooth double the guy picked up in Cairo for a song, with a ball load like a paradox gun would be in the future (3 drams, as I recall), and didn't have too many issues. Sir Baker was also highly impressed with the small bore rifles the Americans were using (breechloaders by that point) to bring down buffalo (which are the same size as CB), elk, and big bear. He was also impressed by J Purdey and Sons's small bore express rifles (both in muzzleloading and breech loading), considered them excellent walking rifles ideally suited for Fallow Deer, Red Deer, and the like.

On the flip side, you have good ol' James Forsyth claiming that anything less than 16 bore (.65) is inadequate for deer... lol. Then again, he also claimed his friend shot a buff in the face with an 8 bore and it had no appreciable effect lol.

animal not immediately going down isn't really an issue, so long as it can be easily recovered and/or changes its temperment. Things shot through the lungs dont live long. It's the matter of driving the bullet through the animal when you get up to buffalo, elephant, and hippo that causes issues with non-jacketed bullets.

Lovin this thread though, crazy how its ran this long lol

The more I Read about .58 doubles I Find a 600gr Bullet pushed upwards of around 1500fps has killed Rhino
Yet when going after a Mac Truck, I like to have as much power as Possible.
When I was a Assistant to a guide In South Africa for 2 months- I seen a Rhino up close (100 yards) and I wanted a Howitzer. Otherwise .58 double with 135-140 of 2F is Plenty for most anything. It’s been done. Plus with a Low charge and a patched ball- Deer or Antelope is suitable.
