I'm a big fan of peep sights and would love to put one on my new Trade Rifle. However, I'd like something more traditional than the Lyman receiver sight...more like the tang sight they make for lever rifles.

Does anybodymake a peep or ghost ring for this rifle that wouldn't screw up the traditional look?

Thanks,

TM

BTW: This is a great forum. I had about a dozen questions and have answered most of them with a quick visit to the archives.

I am also a big fan of the peep sight and until PA went to a rule that bucks have to have three points on a single side to be legal, thus putting a definate spin on the ability to not only see but count points, I never used a scoped rifle. I believe that if you take a look at the Dixie of Track or the Wolf catalogs you may find something that will fit. I do not have either of them in front of me right now but -- I recall that there are verner (varner?) type disc sights that may do the job. However, these critters are expensive. I left the capital E off my original expensive -- because I did not want to discourage you :peace:

Check the Thompson Center catalog or web site. They have a tang mount peep sight. I have one of them on one of my T/C Renegades & love it. I think they are about $40.

Chet: After pricing the Vernier, I think the cap "E" in "Expensive would be appropriate;). However, there were some other options @ the Track site like the TC, which is exactly what I'm looking for...I'm going to call and see if it'll fit my rifle without any drilling. Looks real similiar to the Williams that I'm used to.

Thanks,

TM

They will fit the trade rifle and Deerstalker tang perfectly without drilling. I have one on my deerstalker, and they are great. They are a little more than 40.00 but not as much as a lyman peep. I think you can get one for about 55.00. Cain's Outdoors has a used, like new one for sale at theier store. I think they are wanting 40.00 for it. You could give them a call. I live near them but they sell online and I am sure if you gave them a call, they would sell it to you and ship it.

Good luck,

Brian

Lyman makes peep sights other than the model 57 you most commonly see on their guns. Try their website and Brownells or Midsouth.

Or when dealing with "traditional" themes one could look into traditional 1750 rather than "traditional 1999".

We could go to muzzle loader supply companies and support them in the "little things we need" so they will still be there for the big things, rather than cater to the suppliers of "plastic guns" who are now refusing to stock sidelocks.

The Log Cabin Shop has eleven pages of sights available for MLs. Among these pages are a dozen peeps that will work on the GPR. On page 10 there is even a "traditional" peep sight that is designed for the purist.

Ghost,

In your opinion what would be a period correct peep sight for a hawken style flintlock rifle. Not including sights that could have been added to a 25 or 50 year old rifle, but wouldn't have been available when the gun was built?

I am also curious to know how period correct are the Lyman trade rifle and GPR to say the first decade of the 19th century. If the style wasn't around until later than that, a flinter wouldn't be very realistic, would it?
