So, Hydrocarbons plus carbon equals asphalt? Isn't there some sand and gravel in there? Or were you referring to tar?
That pretty much says it all.
I was going to use Crisco until I talked to Dave at the Gun Works. I remembered I had an old jar of Vaseline on the shelf in my garage. My other thought was Coconut oil. There’s a big jar of it in the kitchen for cooking. I figured it would smell good too!
My other thought was trying to find some lard. I remember my friend’s mom from Mexico used it for cooking when I was a kid. It came in a red box and made her kitchen smell funny.
There are a couple of guys in our club who hunt bear. I’ll see if I can obtain some grease from them. My patch lube is a product from October Country called “Bumbling Bear Grease” (beeswax and bear grease). I suppose I could have melted that down and added a little more wax to make it more solid.
I must say, this gun was easier to clean than some of my others. The fouling wasn’t that bad. Each load went down as easily as the one before it. I cleaned the barrel every 5 shots. However, I’ve noticed that larger calibers (54 and up) don’t seem to foul as badly as those 50 cal and under.
I really don’t need any more answers. It was a stupid question to ask. I’ll search through the threads and see what I can find. I guess was just hoping to run across a chemist who could accurately provide an answer that wasn’t based on prejudice.
Like I said, the first time I heard that petroleum products cause black powder residue to turn to “tar”, was from a ML shop owner selling Lube 103.

Yes petro oils interact with black powder (sulfur, carbon, Salt Pete)
Simple chemistry reaction, the combo will make a sludge like tar, which will slow the next round from going down the tube.

My biggest problem loading is dry mouth, otherwise spit patch works great.

I pre-wet mine and carry a good supply in pill bottle(s) I put a squirt of detergent in the bootle full of patches, then add water to fill to the brim. Give the patches a few squeezes to get the air out and mix the soap. Let them sit for a while to thoroughly soak, and you are good to go, On the line, I remove a stack of 10-20 patches at a time, squeeze them until they don't drip. Put those in my pouch or a smallcontainer to keep them wet until I need one to load. My guns stay clean all day doing this.

I don't know if they mix or not. But BP and water DO mix, I've tried it and it dissolves into a nice slurry.
