just posting a few pics of my over the log rifle. i purchased it from a member of the forum over a year ago and never got pics. it is a .55 cal with a siler lock, bill large barrel and a nicely figured stock. poured pewter nose cap and fixed sights. 1-1/4 inch by 42" barrel, shoots like a dream, one hole at 50 yards. this is the rifle that i blew apart a finger tip with! (watch out for the vented drum!) FW - would you classify the style as a hawkin, just much larger. weigt is about 15 lbs. i wanted to add my m4 carbine in the pic but had poor lighting. the m4 carbine is only as long as the stock! mark, thanks for a great rifle!

Very nice my friend. Hope the finger wasn't to bad a shape. Is this photo after the mishaps?

finger is all healed up. just has a few black spots under the skin. the photos are from when i bought the rifle. i know where not to put my hand now when shooting from the bench. my camera just won't take a decent close up. i wish i could get a good photo of the nose cap, it was done beautifully. rifle was made late 60's or early 70's maker unknown. i know that one of the previous owners was a fellow named Buck Ruth out of kentucky, i would love to have more history on this one.

Nice to see ya got a pic of it up here, I'll keep that finger thing in mind too, it has been that long?? YA got coveralls? :rotf: GMWW good to see your still with us. Fred :hatsoff:

Nice rifle. One hole at 50yrds Is what is all a bout. Great. That the way they are suppose to shot. Dilly

Thanks Fred. To be quite honest, I got a little burnt out (pun intended) on some of the flaming going on. :shocked2: I was also pretty busy getting ready for hunting season.

Walruski if you don't mind me asking, how is the gun?

Sure has some pretty wood on that one. I'm lost about the vented drum though. Does it have an open vent instead of a cleanout screw or something?

Here's a forum devoted to over the log matches. You can keep up with the upcoming shoots and results at:

the cleanout screw is drilled to allow air to escape when the cap ignites. theoretically the lock/ignition time is improved by not having to push a column of air ahead of the flame. just don't stick a finger by the hole when shooting from the bench. i very neatly removed a fingertip last winter.

Man I've never heard of such a thing. Must make shooting on the right side of you a little hairy! :rotf:

i wish i had asked earlier, that link has a lot of good info. i missed a lot of good shoots. really want to try my hand at this.

GMWW - the rifle is coming along. stock all glued and refinished. front dovetail repaired and sight installed. rear sight needs replaced, just have to buy one.

Nice looking and shooting rifle but how did you get a finger up there anyway?
