Just picked up this bolt at JoAnns yesterday…
Didn’t have calipers in my pocket but luckily it’s .018”
A bit spendy but there’s no yellow spots!!

(The numbers might help someone else who goes to JoAnns with no way to measure)

100% cotton too! It should make great patching material once it's washed to get the sizing (starch) out. I like to use a mesh bag for that as the edges fray and like to strangle any other clothing that is in the washer at the same time. Around here, pillow ticking is a 50-50 blend while mattress ticking is a thicker, 100% cotton material. It also mics to .018.

I haven't had to worry about finding pillow ticking in a long time. Few years back an older lady showed at our range, her husband was a formal member who passed away. She bought some "shooting stuff" the family didn't want to deal with selling, mostly cleaning supplies and one zip lock bag full of commercial patches.

This is a good thing because my wife sews and when she runs out of fabric for a project or can't find it at the store, she raids my BP supplies. Pillow ticking and Muslin can be used as "backing" for her projects, no clue what that is. She did make it up to me and bought a full bolt of diaper flannel (75% off), makes great cleaning patched for all my firearms.

In other fabric store news, I went to JoAnn Fabric a couple weeks ago, asked for pillow ticking, and was sent to the muslin area. That store contained no actual pillow ticking. They did have thick outdoor cotton duck, but it would take some seriously undersized LRBs to use that in my rifles.

@Cattywompuss, by now you should also be aware of the #40 Drill Cloth that is in the utility cloth aisle with the muslin. Drill is 0.017"-0.018" and is as good a patch as pillow ticking. There is also denim. Although you do have to read the bolt to be sure it is 100% cotton. You really are not limited to using pillow ticking only.

Of course I'm aware of it, but I like stripes. 👍

What did the JoAnn ticking mic at once washed? Mine was .018" at the store and .015" once passed through the machine on cold/delicate.

That did the trick. Washed the remaining ticking I had with hot water and ran it through the dryer. Measured .017-.018". Thank you both for the info. If anyone is looking for the material at JoAnns, they are also calling it matress ticking.

Try the #40 drill cloth seems to be stronger won't fray with a liquid lube. On small calibers ticking only seems to work with a heavy grease lube, tallow bees wax ect.

This is the good stuff. I’ve bought the same stuff from Jo Ann’s.

Spit patch and have never blown a patch. Never any holes, could probably reuse them.

Shot my 58 The other day Had no patches So was going to Cut Red ticking at the Muzzle Too tight. That's OK I'll just pull the Ball out by the Ticking. The patch pulled Out The ball popped Out Straight up in the Air Then straight down the Barrel. 110 grains of Goex Topped by a .570 Ball No patch. So I shot the Unpatched Ball 85 yards. Straight as a String. A little High

Howdy guys:
Just a heads-up. Our local Wally world has it in .015" but, like Crockford, you will have to search it out.
Most of the gals in the fabric dept. at our local Wally world, are 18 er so, and look at you like your Ted Bundy or from another planet when you ask for "Pillow Ticking." :~))) I found it (again like Crockford), the hard way. Just thought I'd jump in here with that? If it helps great, if not nothing lost. I carry a set of 0-1/2" mini Mics. all the time. You never know when you might need them? :dunno:
Merry Christmas. 🎅🎄
