That is dangerous misinformation, tenngunn. It's a mistake to believe that smoking pipes or cigars confer a low risk of cancer. That simply isn't so.

Spence

Sorry Spence but it is so. As a long time smoker of cigars, pipes, etc. I felt the sane way until I was diagnosed with stage 3 Lymphoma and beagb studying the subject in detail. While such smoking of pipes and cigars is less problematic as regards cancer than cigarettes, there are still bonafide links to cancer such as mouth mouth, lip, tongue, throat, esophagus, larynx and lung, etc. Other problems can also occur: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/quit-smoking/expert-answers/cigar-smoking/faq-20057787

That link discusses cigar smoking but other links will show similar problems with pipe smoking.

Now before anyone thinks I'm anti-smoking - NOT!
Despite my health issues I still like a pipe now and again or a good cigar ( I like black cheroots). I also like a nice shot now and again although I'm not supposed to drink at all.
But I decided some time ago and now at age 62 that quality of life is more important to me than length alone (and yeah I don't want to kick the bucket yet..)

I'm 83 and smoked for abut 60 of those years. Something is going to kill me pretty soon and it might as well be something I enjoy. I do remember that life insurance companies a few years ago gave you non-smoker rates if you smoked cigars or a pipe, no cigarettes. Smoke only occasional pipe and cigar now. The medic who tried to talk me into quitting years ago is dead. graybeard

As with many things, it depends on how you measure it. It's true that risk is less for some pipe and cigar smokers, but it's because they don't smoke them in the same way they would cigarets. It's all proportional to exposure, how much you smoke, how much and how deeply you inhale, etc. If you inhale your cigar and pipe, risk is the same as with cigarets. It's obvious that risk of cigaret smoking is less if you smoke half a pack per day than if you smoke 2 packs. The risk is the same for pipe and cigar smokers if they smoke them in a way that gives them exposure to an equivalent amount of cigaret smoke.

As an added benefit for cigar and pipe smokers, the risk of oral cancer, cancer of the esophagus, larynx, pharynx, etc., is increased because both cause constant exposure to the condensate that collects and seeps into your mouth. That risk is squared for chewers.

They smoke just fine for being maple,

They don't impart any additional "flavoring" as the wood was well seasoned. The donor tree had been down for a few years before he salvaged it. Due to the figuring and hardness, I'd think it will give as good as service as a briar wood bowl.

The bottom one is a egg and talon motif that I've seen done in meerschaum quite often.

I only smoke at reenactments so, maybe a half dozen bowls at most over a weekend, once a month. I don't inhale it into my lungs either. I just like the flavor and it adds to the impression.

I do worse things that should shorten my lifespan before smoking no more than I do.

Wasn't me confering the (mis)information, twas the united states surgon general who found light to moderated pipe smokers out lived non smokers. Something about tobbacco smoking healthy? NO, it just pipe smokers tend to be type B peronalities. One does run a risk of throat and mouth cancers but only seen in heavy...7 bowl per day + smokers. Time after time 1-3 bowl per day pipe smokers were about equal to non smokers.
As for it being addictive, well I've been smoking for 40 years and aint addicted yet :haha: In truth I often miss 1 ,2 , or 3 days with no withdrawl symptoms. Good tobbaco is very light on nicotine. It was not until the mid 90s that we had to change the clinical definition of addiction to include tobbaco at all, we define no other addiction that way.
I'm 58, my bp this afternoon was 107/52, my heart rate is 45-55 normaly, my total colesterol is 134 and ran 8 miles before work did wieghts for 1/2 an hour. Made a bacon cheese and mushroom fattata, with cream, and had me a good bowl of latikia blend.

No kidding. But I'm an " active couch potato " exercise hard 3-4 times per week then laze the rest. Due to my work schdual I worked out Monday won't do it again till Friday.
Looking at the" unhealthy" side of any thing from smoking to the latest you eat this and you will die hype, I have to wonder what's contributed to by just poor activity. Do you smoke, drink coca cola, eat too much rich food, avoid grits, get off the couch . It won't save you but it will make you better

I have a great picture of a bear running at the camera and the caption says "Not a Runner? You are now" but for some reason it wouldn't let me post it.

Kept showing the html text instead of the image.

It would have been hilarious. :rotf:

It was likely a posting error on your part.....I've done it myself. The Http must be highlighted when you paste the address and when it appears in your text box it should be its own paragraph.

That's great -- inspirational Tenn. Not the avoiding grits bit which is more for ones intelligence and emotional health and safety than physical, but the running so far on a whim. And at your age and with your motivation... Wow! I get tired thinking about driving eight miles.

For the record you are not supposed to inhale cigar or pipe smoke, you just bring the smoke into your mouth and taste it, plus most pipe and cigar smokers will only have 1 to 3 bowls or cigars a day vs. 25 to 50 cigarettes and inhaling them. So the cancer risk for Pipe and cigar smokers is minimal IMHO.

That's kind of like saying that with radiation it's not how many rads your exposed to but how long your exposed...
Or it's like an LD50 rating....just because your exposure is below the ld50 doesn't mean that it wont kill you....it just means that half of the people exposed won't die..
