Hello all,

I have a old cutlery canteen and a nice sheet of red wool baize that i am going use for a pistol box.

Has any one here any advice before i start? I am handy with tools but not stripped or refitted a cutlery canteen before and hope to avoid and silly rookie errors.

Cheers all.

I have made a few. I found the easiest way to install the dividers is with a drill and small screws. First, after you have cleared out the box, line it with the wool baize. I usually glue mine in place. Watered down Elmer's glue will do the trick. Spend some time arranging your items until everything fits. Use a pencil to mark where the dividers are going. Make the dividers out of 1/4" to 3/8" solid wood not plywood (because it will hold the screws better). Go ahead and cover the dividers with your baize now. Using the penciled lines as a guide drill small holes through the bottom of the box. Place the dividers over the holes and then use the small screws to hold them in place. Corners are handy places to install small boxes with a lid for a supply of lead balls. Have the lid of the supply box just barely touch the lid of your canteen when the lid is closed so that the container will stay closed when turned on its side. I have also installed a magnet in the box to hold a tin of caps in place. I'll try to post some pictures later

Gents, thank you for your replies. This will help a lot.
I am getting started on this in October so will update.
Once more, thank you.
