The big question is how much gun building or crafty experience do you have? If it is none, a slap together Traditions kit would be a good starting point.
The term "kit" can be a lot of different things, from a simple assembly kit to a parts kit that takes some serious gunsmithing skills to complete.

Yes, ditto that for a "first project", that's how I started down the rabbit hole. And you actually end up with a gun that shoots pretty good. The only con I would say about the Traditions kit is that the wood they give you, ie their "select hardwood", actually is kinda plain.
