Guys, I'd put this in the members' regional forum, but I don't have the pennies quite yet (next pay-day).

1. I'm in Altus, OK.
2. I have an 1851, and .50 cal I have never fired.
3. I need somewhere I can go shoot without getting chased off by a farmer or arrested.

I'm afraid if I don't fire these smokers, the "MLPD" will come place them in a foster home due to neglect. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

It is sure getting harder every day, I'll ck Muzz Blast and see if you have a club near you, or someone may get ya a spot. Fred :hatsoff:

bd,
I was going to suggest checking about shooting
on the AFB,but I was slow.

I am guessing by your avatar you are a Captain in USAF Security Forces?

When I was in the AF most bases had a rod and gun club or there was one close by - something about guys in the military liking to shoot guns I suspect

I am, I'd go shoot @ our range here, but it can only run frangible ammo right now, so no lead.

405 is the Oklahoma City area code, but I'll call outdoor rec tomorrow and see what they know.

Thanks all!

Have you talked to the local police department? Gun shop? Surely there is some kind of public range near you. I used to get all kinds of referral calls about " a place to shoot" from a shift Sergeant at my local Police department. When he retired, the calls stopped.

If you contact the NMLRA they can give you the State Representatives for your state, with phone numbers, and addresses. A call to them should get you pointed towards the nearest Charter Club, or a public range that is closer. But, start with the local police department on a Sunday. Gunshops may not be open today.

I found my list of State Reps: For Oklahoma, call: Bart Saunders, Norman, Okla., 405-831-8448; or email; [email protected]

Both Charter clubs listed in Muzzle Blasts are in central or Eastern Oklahoma. But, you might find out more information about your area talking directly to Clifton W. Sikes, 404-997-3280. He is the contact person for the " Cross Timbers Primitive Society.

Thanks for the help, guys! It looks like I'm probably going to have to befriend a local farmer in order to regularly shoot safely. I've discussed the issue with a few of my guys who are also local PD/SD reserve officers, and the PD range manager, and I'm just about SOL. Apparently, thanks to the land rush out here, pretty much all the open space in this area is Ag land, with the exception of the state parks/preserves w/no ranges. So, I'll have to keep looking.

On a happy note, a while back, George down @ George's Guns (Vernon, TX) told me there's a ML club a little ways East of Vernon (forgot until now). I want to say it was near Electra, TX, but I'll need to call him again and find out. The way he described it, they are a traditional bunch, and might 'vous every now and then.

As a plug to 'ole George... He's a heck of a guy. If anyone finds themselves passing through Vernon, you might think of dropping in for a minute. Good old fashioned gun store, and good conversation. He spent a lot of time explaining this & that to my 3 & 7 year old boys, too! I find nowadays most store owners spend most of their time scolding and telling kids not to touch, so George was a breath of fresh air. But, enough before I sound like an ad agency!!

Thanks again, and I'll give those guys a call anyways, Paul. I'm sure they'd know who might be in my area.

Did you talk to the owner of the indoor range there in Altus? He would know about other ranges, and how far they are, for sure. And, he probably knows some folks who shoot MLers, too.

there are some other options but you'd have to drive over to Lawton, I live in Elgin which is 10 miles north of Lawton and there is a ML club that meets the 3rd Sunday of each month in Sterling which is 7 miles east of me, 25 to join for the year covers family to, you don't have to dress period to shoot either, 80 acres of nice timbered land with some great shooting targets and good group of folks to boot. If your interested shoot me an email, [email protected], I'm retired army but I'll help a airforce fella out.

When I lived in Oklahoma, there was plenty of places to shoot woods etc...

Now for indoor ranges, most if any will not allow BP shooting! I have contacted at least five local indoor ranges, and none will allow!

Excuses are possible powder explosions, sparks burning lane equipment, clogging ventilation systems etc....

You are correct. Its hard to find an indoor range here that will let you shoot BP. My comment to the poster is a response to the NRA list of ranges, which shows an indoor range in Altus. He may not be able to shoot there, but he should be able to get a good referral to a local outdoor range or club where he can. I know AF personnel are on a tight budget, like all service members, so asking him to drive a lot is asking a lot. If we can find him a closer place to shoot, all the better. There are always lots of retired military personnel, and civilian employees living around established bases, and most of them are shooters. He should be able to find information about a close range. The Indoor range in town is just my idea of a " Great Lead"!

Oh, BTW, I hear the same excuses why BP can't be used on Indoor ranges. Sounds like a " Conspiracy" to me! :rotf:
