Pocket Police

I'm liking the look and carry possibilities of these damn cuties! I can't decide which would be "better" - 4 1/2" or 5 1/2" barrel.

Can anybody speak to this out of experience?

Oh, I should mention that it would accompany me on woods walks.

I have the 5 1/2" Colt and Uberti version. The shorter one is... too short for me. Other than that, I like it a lot. :thumbsup:

Stuck my 5-1/2 inside my belt for a day with no problems. Might get a 4-1/2 or just cut this Italian one down.

I have an old CVA "sheriff's model". I was amazed at the accuracy, and the barrel is the shorter version.

Are you allowed to carry a BP handgun when hunting? Not all states allow that. In my state even if you were allowed to carry a BP handgun, during deer season the caliber and powder charge are too low, so a .36 would be "out" in any case.

Looks like my instincts are proving true; Although the 4 1/2" looks pretty cool, the 5 1/2" is more shootable AND looks really cool.

As far as carrying it, I have a personal protection carry permit, so it could just be covered under that. A small percussion revolver in a flap holster, A-ONE personal protection rig!

 

I found a 6.5 inch barreled one, with box, never been shot, really clean. After I purchased it, they told me that the other one on the shelf was the next digit serial number. Argh!

Bart, you 6.5" barreled Police looks perfect, all the lines are graceful and make for a pleasing look.

I guess the only real answer is to buy the 4.5", the 5.5" and the 6.5"

I have a 4.5, 2 5.5, and 2 6.5's. The 4.5 is a handy little one to carry, the 5.5's look like smaller versions of the 8" 1860, and the 6.5's look like long barrels

Very nice, Jaxenro! Looks like yo hit on a logical decision; buy 'em all, and doubles on some.

With the 4.5", how do you deal with the lack of a ramming lever?

The 4.5 has a ramming lever, just short. I think you are thinking of the trapper, 3.5, which doesn't

Very nice. That gun seems to balance very well in the hand. It reminds me of a Ruger Single Six in frame size and handling. A great field peice.

I have a Uberti with the 6.5" barrel. The pocket police is a very nice revolver. Which ever barrel you get, you will like it. :thumbsup:

Like all Colt percussion revolvers, they shoot high, but you can easily correct this, a piece of brazing rod, some file work, and good to go.

The more I look at these the harder the idea of choosing one over the other gets. Plus I discovered I like the look of the Navy more than I would have thought.

So now it's not just a choice between 2 barrel lengths, the choice between models gets thrown in there as well.

That's a fantastic looking piece with the Navy cylinder! You've just given me an idea and a new WANT!

Cimarron offers 3 finishes and 3 barrel lengths on the police and two on the pocket navy, plus the 2 different cylinder types. Since all the parts interchange that's around 30 different combinations you can put together using factory parts. The navy's look good with the fluted cylinders and I have a reference book showing a police from the Colt factory with the rebated cylinder.

Just got the two 5.5's yesterday and my crappy pics dont do justice to the "original" finish they put on them.

Plus sorry the Navy's are 6.5 not 5.5
