The evolution of language has nothing to do with lying to new BP shooters about what things were called, what methods and tools were used, and what clothing was worn and how during the period.
If people who have been doing this long enough, reenecting/living history/or just shooting traditional muzzleloaders, long enough to be helping and advising others would stop spreading myths, legends, and incorrect terminology, we wouldn't be having these discussions.
It has nothing to do with "evolution" of language. It has a lot to do with people repeating something that is wrong often enough for some people to defend it as right......
I think you’re being unnecessarily rigid here. I’ve never argued that “possibles bag” was a historically accurate term—it’s widely understood that it wasn’t. However, it is a generally accepted term now (and for perhaps the past 150 years or more), and that doesn’t need to detract from anyone’s enjoyment or understanding of the hobby.
Insisting on absolute historical purity in every conversation seems counterproductive, especially when it comes to helping new shooters or enthusiasts. Sharing knowledge and fostering interest should come first, and quibbling over terminology—especially when it’s trivial—can alienate people rather than educate them. Wouldn’t it be better to encourage curiosity instead of dismissing others over minor inaccuracies? Just a thought.
As I’ve said… we’ve hijacked this thread enough, and I think this discussion (should you want to continue it) ought to be moved to a new one. Would you like to create it, or should I?
Bring on the hunting bag/shot bag/shooting bag/possibles bag pictures!
