The evolution of language has nothing to do with lying to new BP shooters about what things were called, what methods and tools were used, and what clothing was worn and how during the period.
If people who have been doing this long enough, reenecting/living history/or just shooting traditional muzzleloaders, long enough to be helping and advising others would stop spreading myths, legends, and incorrect terminology, we wouldn't be having these discussions.
It has nothing to do with "evolution" of language. It has a lot to do with people repeating something that is wrong often enough for some people to defend it as right......

I think you’re being unnecessarily rigid here. I’ve never argued that “possibles bag” was a historically accurate term—it’s widely understood that it wasn’t. However, it is a generally accepted term now (and for perhaps the past 150 years or more), and that doesn’t need to detract from anyone’s enjoyment or understanding of the hobby.

Insisting on absolute historical purity in every conversation seems counterproductive, especially when it comes to helping new shooters or enthusiasts. Sharing knowledge and fostering interest should come first, and quibbling over terminology—especially when it’s trivial—can alienate people rather than educate them. Wouldn’t it be better to encourage curiosity instead of dismissing others over minor inaccuracies? Just a thought.

As I’ve said… we’ve hijacked this thread enough, and I think this discussion (should you want to continue it) ought to be moved to a new one. Would you like to create it, or should I?

Bring on the hunting bag/shot bag/shooting bag/possibles bag pictures!

As Vladimir Lenin used to say, " Tell a lie enough and it becomes the truth".
Yes, some serious political applications.

Anybody who has been involved in marketing is familiar with this concept:

""Perception becomes the truth" highlights the powerful influence of how we perceive and interpret the world around us, shaping our understanding of reality. Essentially, it suggests that our subjective experiences and interpretations can create a sense of truth, even if that perception doesn't align with objective reality."

I like to keep it relatively simple. This is more or less what I carry on a regular basis in tandem with my .40 cal Kibler SMR:

My powder horn is attached to the bag strap with a couple of leather thongs. I make a hole in either side of the strap and use an Ashley stopper knot on the backside so they don’t pull through. I have a turned 50 grain powder measure attached in the same way. Balls and pre-cut patches sit loose in the bottom of the bag. Sometimes, if the mood strikes me, I’ll have a strip of pillow ticking fastened around the strap and will cut at the muzzle. Aside from a banjo primer and brass snuff box to keep some cleaning patches, a jag, and some spare flints in, that’s about it.
man that's nice

I really like bags that have straps for attaching the powder horn to the bag shoulder strap. Keeps everything together and eliminates a separate powder horn shoulder strap.
And I do not, I have, I am not sure but somewhere between fifteen and twenty bags give or take. I have more horns than that of course but only have three that go to the range with me on a regular basis. Those are the ones that get refilled after every trip so that they are full before the next trip and I just grab the one I want and go.
Getting to the range and finding you do not have enough powder to shoot a match is somewhat frustrating.

Priming horns or mechanisms in every bag of course.

After there whole arguments on the name. I give Germany credit. 🇩🇪

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…”

I have a deep appreciation for muzzleloading and historical re-enactment culture, but this hobby seems to attract some of the most fanatical individuals who can get caught up in the most trivial of debates. 🤷‍♂️

It’s got to be a real turn off to those who are new to the pursuit, watching folks quibble over such things.

My daughter said hunting bag.

I picked it up and asked my 6 year old what is this. She said your hunting bag.

The original post mentioned hunting.

This is my go to rig for off hand shooting, woods walks etc...

The direct translation from German is "Hunting Bag" or the current use of taschen is pocketbook.

I suspect that @Trigger used this blog as the basis for his post.

These bags seem to be much larger than what is needed to merely supply the ammunition for hunting as they incorporate a bag to carry game, mainly fowl as these seem to be associated with fowlers hunting, what else, fowl.

How many bags you carry?

Waterfowl only? No

When I am dressed as in my avatar, I carry three bags, my cartridge pouch with 20 paper cartridges and the tools to maintain my King's musket, my hairy bag or knapsack to carry spare clothing and some personal items, and my linen haversack with rations and eating utensils. On my belt, I have a belly box with 18 paper cartridges and a sword belt with hangar and bayonet.

Not for waterfowl.

I figured and that's fine too.

I use the same bag as a shooting bag. I just take everything u don't need out and set up for the range.

War yea. It would be just ammo.
Id want to drop all my gear and fight.

Hunting. You can do either or both.

My shooting bags are about 4" x 4" leather pouches that hang around my neck. They contain a small tin located in an outside pocket that has balls and patches or wads and bullets. Hanging from the lanyard is my nipple pick, powder measure (deer antler) and a brass capper.

Inside the pouch is a tin of caps, a pack of cleaning patches, jag, worm, bore brush and mop, nipple wrench, and spare nipple.

The way I store my cap locks, each has a shooting bag and powder horn hanging with it. I just grab the riffle out of the case and the other items come with it. This is all I need to shoot them.

My possibles bag contains a turnscrew, a few other tools needed for campfire maintenance. It also carries a flint/steel/charcloth kit, and some survival essentials.

I miss being a 42nd RHR reenactor , here in Australia we had a thriving group that formed a Center Company of the world wide 42nd RHR (Black Watch) 1815 Napoleonic Association.

It was a well organised body with its own Kings and Regimental colors, a Piper and Drummer boy everything correct to the period.

Sadly we faded out as age took its toll and a younger generation simply wasnt interested , nowadays I belong to a small but committed group of generic 18th century Rangers; at 72 its not so demanding.
