I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question or if there's an actual correct answer. Which side should your bag and horn be carried? I'm use to years of Civil War reenacting where all your accoutrements have a proper place to be worn. Is one side more convenient than the other depending on if your right or left handed? I ask this question because I want to try my hand at scrimshawing my powder horn and want the most visible side showing my work......................Thanks!

Personal preference thing, heavily influenced by whether one is left or right handed. I am right-handed and carry the possibles bag on my right hip with the powder horn (if I carry it at all) slightly above the possibles bag. Gun is typically slung muzzle down on my left shoulder... not across my back. Makes the most sense to me. See photo below:

Since I am left handed, and carry my hunting rifle in my left hand, I carry my shooting bag and horn on my right side, at waist level. That way the rifle is not banging (and clanging) against my bag or horn, making noise. I carry my bag high enough that it does not swing when I walk, and I wear my belt over the strap just above the flap so it doesn't move forward or back when I bend or climb. I am sure that you will get lots of input, but this is what works for me.

Experiment with your gear until you find an arrangement that is comfortable and functional.

I’m ambidextrous and may provide bad information, but here goes. I normally carry and shoot my muzzleloader on the right side, my bag is carried under my left arm against my side as is my powder horn. I’ve always seen and heard that the bag and horn were to be carried above the waist line. The orientation of the tip of the horn is also important. I’d highly encourage you to jump off into scrimshaw and working horn; it’s been a fun and rewarding journey for me! Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like there is no right or wrong way to carry them. I'm still not sure which way I would prefer. I'm strongly right handed and would want my strong hand carrying the rifle. But I also would like my more dextrious hand manipulating the powder and measuring tool. LOL

I do carry my rifle in my right hand while wearing bag and horn on same side. Holds everything down and in place. Butt of gun is on ground when loading and gun is cradled across body with left arm while priming with right hand.

When I started I thought left was the best, I’m right handed, but left seamed right.
I drop almost every thing I carry in left pocket now.
However when I went to my first ml shoot I saw everyone with bag on the right, so that’s what I adopted
As said military had a rule, civilians did what they want.
Paintings show mostly right and generally high, mines still on my hip I just can’t get used to it high

At the shooting range , horn with mechanical valve , is on the right , so I can manipulate , horn valve , with right hand, and accoutrements stored in the bag on the left. In the field , hunting , bag is on the left , again , with a smaller horn tucked under the bag flap to aid in keeping the horn dry. No matter where the equipment is arranged , I use a short starter to seat each patched ball , struck with my right hand. To each , his own. Ok , I 'll admit to hunting w/o a horn , sometimes , and using pre measured vials of powder , from the pouch , as well. LOL :thumb:

As was said earlier, unless you're involved in a military uniform situation, there's no rule on this one.
I'm right hand dominant, I have a bit more raw strength in my left arm and hand but my right hand has a lot more dexterity, I shoot off my right shoulder. I carry my shot pouch and horn under my right arm, very high. I've never had an issue carrying the gun under my right arm, but mostly carry it in my left hand so that if I need it, my left hand is already roughly where it needs to be. When loading the heel of the stock is slightly behind my left foot, gun angle up and forward, pouch and horn can now be easily accessed with my dominant right hand. Gun can be trapped against my left side with my arm if I need both hands for something. Also, slinging shot pouch and horn off my left shoulder means no strap on my right shoulder to possible interfere with placing the butt of the gun on the shoulder.

Only thing Id like to add is that I carry my horn on the left side.
With the horn on the right side its right under the lock. Sparks be sparks, and they fly.
I use a belt fouler bag on the right side. So that it does not interfere with my shooting.
