I have a deer hide that I will get tanned this year. I want to use it for a possibles bag. What I would like to get my hands on is a pattern to work from. I tried the search function here, but got nowhere!

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

I made this pattern a long time ago and it worked for me ok. I added some pockets on the inside which I found out came in handy. Then I started playin with this and ended up with that. I have always enjoyed makin stuff. But I gotta admit, when I first joined this form,, I did have/do some really bad stuff. But these Boys were always on my side and,, in their way,, pushed me to get better. (that alone should give you an idea how bad the early stuff way)
Any way, like I always tell people that point out a mistake, it's RUSTIC.. it's supposeta look like that.. Works for me..

I'll second the book reco, but in the meantime there's a fowler pouch pattern here on the site. That's the one I built first and did it with 4-5oz leather. But for my tastes it's small enough that 3 oz or so is a lot more functional.

Follow the instructions carefully, because there are a couple of "blind alleys" if you don't.

If the impulse is to build a bag, I'd carry on with your plan to have it tanned. Maybe later on if you get fascinated with leather and feel the impulse, that's the time to try tanning your own. Right now having to tan the leather before you can build a bag is kinda like having to build hoover dam so you can flick a light switch.

Here's one bit of unsolicited advice for when you have leather in hand, from whatever source.

You'll find deer leather pretty soft and stretchy. It's easy to draw your stitches too tight and pucker it, and once built it's going to stretch way out of shape with a load in it.

LaBonte tipped me (and anyone else reading) to a way around the worst of it: Pre-stretch your leather. Makes sense once you think of it, but after three years of cussing I still hadn't thought of it till he spoke up! :rotf:

A tip of the old hat to LaBonte. :hatsoff:

I'm with brown bear-get it tanned. I have nothing BUT commercially tanned hides simply because you noggin heads kept this sport such a secret for so long. :cursing: Kidding.
But now I'm here and I still won't tan my own hides. Got too much on the fire now! :surrender:

I filched the pattern Claude posted, and got a good start with it, but then got sidetracked by a horn i'm doing for a friend of my eldest daughter (actually, the fellow's wife asked for one and, nitwit that i am, i started it and now it's taken over what little spare time i have).

The bag is smaller than i anticipated, but when completed, should be really nice, with lots of space for little gadgets and pockets for the various stuff (without which i cannot possibly exist: the guy who dies with the most cool gadgets is THE WINNER).

By the way, thanks for the heads up on pre- stretching the deerhide.

I generally draw my patterns out with Powerpoint and then print them out. If the pattern works well with paper, then I transfer the pattern to stiff thin cardboard or file folder materials and use them many times. If you would like some of these patterns let me know.

I downloaded a .zip file with some .pdf patterns in it, but now I can't find the original site where I found them. The pattern turned out an 8x8 pouch and I extended the flap to add a beavertail on the front. I had enough leather left over to make a second one.

Message me and I can email you the pdfs.
