That's very much the same conclusion I came to also, in fact most of the bags being made today I think would be pretty expensive if they had existed in that time.
Not meaning to take away from any that are being made today many are fantastic looking bags and mine will follow along the line of the examples I have seen.
I think it's safe to say that probably most shooters of the time made there own bags out of what they had available to them at the time and didn't wory much about compartments.
 
Most of the bags made today are far too large and the leather is heavy. Many have too much crap hanging from the bag and strap...
