Kinda silly question, but if shoot right handed, which side should your possibles be on? Thanks.

I shoot right handed, so bag on the right side. Because loading steps are also done with the right hand.

How about possibles on the left and shooting bag on the right. Works for me.
Fox

I am right handed, also. I carry my bag on my left side and my horn on my right. It it easier for me to pull out balls, patches, caps or flints with my left hand and handle my horn with more control with the right hand. It's all a personal choice and whatever you are comfortable with. Try both sides and see which way works for you.

i carry my possibles bag on my left side, my powder horn on my right side and carry my rifle in my right hand....at the range i hold the powder measure in my left pour with my right and dump then with my left, so i carry in a way that i use the same as at the range :v ...........bob

:hmm: I've seen dozens of posts about which side a possibles bag should be worn on and I've come to this conclusion. The possibles bag SHOULD not be worn on any specific side. It should be worn on the side that is most comfortable and convenient for the shooter.

The only exception for this is when one is portraying a soldier and then it should be worn as prescribed in the regulations. And yes I know soldiers don't generally wear possibles bags.

I shoot right handed and carry my bag and horn on the left. Just seems natural for me - maybe it's that the bag on the left helps balance the gun at my right shoulder.
Note: I carry my horn on the left as well just above the bag and tucked along my side. Being that I shoot a flinter - this could be a hazard if you should forget to put the plug back in the powder horn :surrender: Several years ago, I was getting ready to load when I noticed a burnt hole about the size of the end of a pencil on my patching material (I carry tied to the strap of the bag). After seeing how close of a call this could have been - I'm double careful to put the plug back into the horn.
Sorry - didn't meant to ramble on with this post. Just don't want anyone hurt

Good tips.

Do whatever is the easiest for your loading. Personally, I cradle my rifle on my left side, so both the bag and the horn ride on the right.

One other thing I usually do - and I know some folks disagree - is to NOT use a thong to keep my plug attached to the horn. By using my teeth to hold the stopper whether I'm loading or priming, I have a physical reminder that I need to put the plug back in the horn. The only thing you may want to do is keep a spare plug tucked away in your pouch in case you lose it. Though I've done this for the past 5 years, and so far so good.

Glad you posted this - it's the little things that can make a big difference. My plug still has the leather thong on it - it's just cut from the horn NOW ... not as hard on the teeth :haha:

as most have indicated it is a personal thing I shoot right handed and usually have my bag on the left, I occasionaly shoot out of a small market wallet hung from my sash, or a 3"x5" bag that works well when worn high on either side, find the method/bag type that is most comfortable for you there is no right or wrong unless doing documented military stuff.

Basically, what ever side is more comfortable and that might depend whether you're ambidexterous or not. Some people shoot primarily right handed, but practice week-hand too (like me). As long as you don't have the "dropsies", do what's best for you! Make smoke and have fun doing it! Dave

Hi Navaho,

I agree it is personal preference.
Just experiment.
Im right handed so I use my right side.
But if Im doing a lot of hikeing I push my bag to the back side of my hip. Sort of over my butt.
Sometimes the flapping bothers me.
But it can easily be spun around for quick use.

If I am shooting an extended string from a bag, I like my bag on the right -- I am right handed.

On the other hand (LOL) if I am walking in the woods all day, carrying the gun on the right rubs it against the bag a lot and I sometimes shift the bag to the left.

Here's my rig. I am right handed.
