This is a piece built by committee. It is loosely a PA longrifle from the post-Rev War era. Call it "Late Longhunter". John Donelson is building me a hand-forged-iron mounted semi-copy of a J. Rupp (the elder) Lehigh based on the profile & approximate dimensions of an original (2" less barrel length).
This is a copy of the same original J. Rupp Lehigh rifle, but by Eric Kettenburg (note cherry stock)
L.C. Rice made the 44" swamped (medium crown w/ slight cone) barrel in .54 cal, got the Jim Chambers L-5 "Early Germanic" Christian Spring style flint lock from Tip Curtis, premium
cherry stock (a little different), fleur-de-lis carving at comb & wrist, some other carving at tang, as budget holds up for a rudementary "C" scroll, and the type-identifying Indian/Liberty Head incised carving ahead of trigger guard, engraved patchbox and toe-plate, silver front sight & wrist inlay with my monogram.
Fred Miller is (at the moment, I hope) inlaying the barrel into the stock for me.
It's bordering on a fantasy piece, as there are no signed J.Rupp iron-mounted longrifles. But, there are only two known signed ones anyway, and they are both primo works (meaning he probably built several before those two). I just wanted iron furniture and I like the looks of cherry (especially with a bit of carving - makes it show up better).
Ted Reese (Calico Jack's Trading Post) is at the moment making me a copy of a hunting pouch (plate #11 on page 25) from Madison Grant's book of approximately the right period to complement the rifle. (Had to get this back to "Possible Bags").
