Powder horn project

I’m working on a powder horn, using a bison horn. The directions don’t say, but should you use any kind of coating on the horn when you’re done? The only thing the directions say is to polish the horn with fine grit sandpaper or steel wool. I’ve finished with the steel wool, but I’m curious if I should use polyurethane, linseed oil, or anything else for protection. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would not use any of those at a bare minimum perhaps a very lite application of pure bees wax and then wiped down very well.

What he said X2. Wax it. If you really want it to jump, take it to a polishing wheel. Buff the heck out of it, then wax it.
Don't be surprised if, in a year or two, it needs buffing again. Bison can be stubborn that way.
If you take it to the limit, you can see your reflection on one of those. Steel wool can't give you that.

I wax mine with beeswax.
