When grooving the spout-end of a horn for the carry strap, how do I know how deep I can excavate before piercing the horn?

use a small flashlight and drop it into the open end of the horn, better to use one of the flexarm small flashlights if you can find one

I check the exit hole for size and depth before putting the plug in the base of the horn. Then I note the diameter approximately where I want to reduce the outside diameter. And to add an extra safety I reduce the outside with a flash light shinning in from the base hole this lets me know if I am getting thin on the wall. Then after the outside is done I put the plug in the horn.

Good advice above. I use a small goose neck that I picked up I think at Harbor Freight. For starting out, a light is indispensable. You can actually see how thick the horn is with the light shinning through from the inside. Another trick that you will learn is to gauge the thickness by sound. As the horn gets thinner, when you tap on it, the sound will go from a "thunk" to a "tock". This will come with experience...

so far, i've been really lucky... gotta get one of those light gadgets, though; no sense 'pushing it.'

I guess that i ahve been lucky, when i get to the point that i think that i can go a little more, i stop. i have found that when i go a little more it seems like it is always too much. good luck and have fun
