I went to the range yesterday and fired two shots
in my 50 cal rifle. As I was cleaning for the
third shot, I ran a Wonder Lube Blue cleaning patc
down to the breech and out came sandy/grainy
powder that looked un-burned. Not much but
maybe 3-8 grains.

Is this unburned powder or prime powder or what?
Is this normal or happen to any other shooters.

I even use an over powder felt wad and a .15
patch on a .490 ball. My recovered patch showed
very frayed edge 360 degrees but fairly intact
everywhere else.

I've been shooting long enough to have thought
of that. Come to think of it, I oiled liberaly
last week and don't remember running a dry
patch down before loading.

Thanks for the simple reminder.

The best way to clean oil out of the breech before loading is to flush the breech with alcohol- Then follow up with some dry patches to get any condensation moisture out of the barrel, too.
