I was talking muzzleloading with a co-worker and he asked me how much powder I keep at home.It would seem that, according to him, there are limits as to the amount of powder and primers that a person is allowed to keep at there residence. Now,is this something that varies state by state and if so where does one start looking to check compliance?I know that a lot of us buy at least 5lbs or more to minimize the hazmat charges so how are you storing it?I keep mine in one of those powder magazines that Maine Powder House was selling a year or so ago.And of course the primers are kept seperate.

ATF TO IMPLEMENT SAFE EXPLOSIVES ACT . . . On January 24, 2003 ATF will officially begin implementation of the Safe Explosives Act of 2002. This new statute imposes additional controls on the sale and possession of explosives used for commercial purposes.

" These changes do not affect the current requirements for the acquisition of black and smokeless powder.".........

......" In the case of black powder, permits are not required when it is being used for cultural and or sporting purposes and the purchase involves quantities of less than 50 lbs......"

Ok, so that means ya don't tell em how much ya got. Why wave a red flag at em yellin' "Yohoooo, oh Mr. ATF man, looook what I got!"

The less they know the better off we are.

Do I sound disgruntled? Maybe my shorts are bunched up in the wrong way......

Ok so now we have the BATFE official "word" on the subject. Thanks for putting that up guys.I still wonder if there are some vague local regs that exist some places but you may be calling attention to yourself just by asking...
Paranoid you ask?...Nope,just being careful :hmm:

Depending on where you live...local authorities can be 100 times worse than the Feds. If it were me...don't ask and don't tell. That said, if you were to err on the side of caution..with anything over 50 pounds I would build something like an outhouse with a roof that could blow off easily, and definetely keep it padlocked.

I thought the official atf powdr magazine with a heavy duty thing of 4x4s in the ground about 120 from any structures on the property.

I think that you need to check the state and local codes especially the local fire codes... some fire marshals can really be picky...

Funny, we gotta worry about powder and sorts, yet we can go to the grocery store, buy some bleach, buy some ammonia, put them together and....... VAVOOOOOM!.

When will they quit trying to protect us from us?

Yeah, if they keep that up there won't be anymore Darwin awards, and lots of stupid people running around. Speaking of which, has anybody heard anymore about the Father Son Cannon theives, that looked like they were trying for the multi-generation version of a Darwin award, dow there in Ohio. Bill

Now isn't that typical of any gov't reg - do they ever look at reality?? Couldn't they have made it 51 lbs since bp comes in 1 lb cans and 25 can cases!!!

What a bunch of... ?? :imo:
