Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
It depends on what kind of "powder" your asking for. Pyrodex both 2F & 3F is cheap and readily available at most retailers including Cabelas, Bass Pro shops etc... Goex, Swiss it's another conversation. Even my local shooting range does not carry real Black... so you may be limited to the suggestions this forum provides... personally I use Powder Inc.
I seems like alot of money but in the long run it saves... try everything you can untill you have the grouping you are happy with.. FFG, FFFG, Pyrodex, Geox, KIK, etc.. Once you have your magic mojo sauce then you can stock up...
Powder has the Hazerdus Material cost so buying in volume saves money. Graff and Sons had a sale going and most do from time to time. In a 54 I would use FF and try different charges and patch thicknesses. If you decide to go with the synthetic's then you have more choiced. Right now not all brands of black powder are available at all times. They work pretty much the same though. Geo. T.
Try Jacks Powder Keg. You can order in mixed case lots of 25 and 50 lbs., if I remember correctly. It is a big out put but at around $14.00 per pound (which is a $11.00 per pound savings in my area) it pays for it's self real quick. As said above let your gun tell you which powder to use. I use 2F.
Do ask around where your at, is there a muzzleloader club near you? Some small shop may sell powder.
Whenever I pass through Denver I try to stop at THE BLUNDERBUSS just a one room old school smokepole shop, but He's there for me so I try to throw some $ to him when I can.
