If I can get the photo to post here are some shots of round ball and mini's shot into wet saw dust at fifty yrds with 60 grain FFF. The top is the round balls the bottom are the hollow based minis.This shows the "shock effect" that the minis have. At the top are before firing, below are two recovered projectiles.

Do they open up on deer the same way? or do they just pass through? I shot conical's and never recovered a single one after hitting a deer.Mine were 54 cal and where from 395 to 450 gr. lead.

I don't remember ever recovering a round ball from any game I have shot. Though white tails are the largest game I have hunted, I have had pass throughs on every one I have killed.

God bless

Here's what a .54 looks like recovered from the off side of an elk;

Top is the back side and the bottom is the front side. The striations in the front side are pieces of rib bone left in the ball from a dead center hit on a rib going in.

Very impressive fotos. We don't need modern bullets, just pure lead PRB or conicals. Thanks for sharing. :thumbsup:

Wet saw dust or wet shredded newspapers are considered the"poor man's ballastic jelly". So I would assume the expansion would be the same on actual deer tissue. As for recovery from deer the only mini, that I ever recovered from a deer was from a button buck hit at 145 yrds.( I wish the old eyes were good enough for me to take those kind of shots now .) This was after the mini had passed through a large doe and took out two ribs and twisted the spine enough to paralise her.The button buck floped down a hill where he was laying when I went to recover the doe. Two deer with one shot isn't bad for a little 45.I have yet to recover a round ball from a deer. They have all passed through.
