Well, I haven't bought much ML stuff lately, but I've got a GPR kit on the way and I picked up some stuff for it today. I got a box of CCI #11 caps, a pound of Goex 2F, and a box of Hornady .530 round balls, and the total came to around $27!!!!
Could y'all give me some idea of the going prices for stuff nowadays, and maybe even a few hints on where to order stuff for a reasonable price???

Thanks!!

thats about the goin' rate around here. today i paid 14.95 for a 1 lb. goex 3f. 9.60 for 100 .445 balls and 3.95 for cci caps. graf looks like a good place for mail order.

Yeah, the stuff isn't cheap buying it over the counter one item at a time...it's almost always less expensive to buy through the Internet, buy quantities to get reduced prices, and dilute the shipping costs over multiple items, etc.
The down side is you may not shoot all that much or don't want to lay out that much denerio at one time...an option there might be to find a couple guys to go in together and split the load.

Just to add to all that wisdom just given. If you got buddies who shoot BP, pool together for a case of powder to buy in bulk. I will cut you price per lbs. by a couple of bucks. :hatsoff:

Thanks Walrus.
That's pretty much what I paid---$13.99 for the Goex, $3.99 for the caps, and $8.99 for the balls....plus sales tax.
I bought that stuff at a gunshop 60 miles from where I live and it's the closest place for me to get it.
I'd like to buy the powder and caps in bulk and go back to casting my own balls pretty soon.
I know y'all don't want to hear it, but I remember buying Goex for $3.00 a pound, and it was a lot cheaper if you bought a case. :(

I keep an empty can of Goex that has $3.95 on it with magic marker. I don't recall how long ago I bought it. I buy with friends to cut up the case lot price around. That can be problematic at times. The price I pay for my muzzleloading stuff is so much cheaper than some of the other stuff I buy {38/40 factory loads are scarey; 22's are sneakin up there too}

Dont use caps, my friend and his family have been making theirs for years. You thik caps have gone up, try flints! Will have to make our own soon

Powder we all get together and wait for a bulk sale.

Balls, we make our own. Always have, always will.

I sure hope y'all don't get the wrong impression here. I'm gonna keep shootin' for as long as I've got the money to buy a pound of powder. I just want to find the cheapest prices to get it!
It's kinda like the way I feel about beer and chewing tobacco----I don't think they've ever cost as much as they're worth!

You can augment the price my making what gear you can yourself...

Things like ball starter, powder measurer, cap holders can be made from wood, antler tips and leather with just minimum tools and a little bit of your time...

This will bring down the overall cost and it's an enjoyable part of muzzleloading too...

Prices have gone up, used to get my powder for $1.98 a pound, flints .25 each caps were .35 a hundred.
But you still have to work a hell of a lot harder than I am willing to spend $10.00 in a afternoon!

I too cringe when I have to buy powder and shot. I make myself feel better about by resinging to the fact and thinking "well at least I can still buy it.

I would buy by the bulk but I dunno if I'm gonna live long enough to shoot it all up. :rotf:

At least my .34 Ohio is stingy on powder and shot. Shooting 350 loads to pound of powder and 625 rb's per 5 lbs of Hornadys #00 buck.

Joe

Johnny, What is involved in making your own caps? That is something that I would like to learn. Let us know, or am I the only one who never heard about this? Maybe a link on it would be helpful. Thanks

Follow this link for a post on making your own cap. Keep in mind that anything concerning making your own explosives is prohibited on this Forum so formulas for the various compounds are not given.
HOMEMADE CAPS

As for costs, $27 doesn't sound too bad for factory produced stuff.
Not much a person can do about the powder and caps, but by casting the balls instead of buying them the $9+ can be reduced to about $4.
As for the powder, if I were to buy some of that 777 stuff, the local gun shop thinks I should pay them over $25/pound. :shocked2:

If you were shooting a modern gun instead of that old smokepole, and buying 100 rounds of Remington ammo from Cabela's you would be spending $74.95 for .270's, $69.95 for .308's, $54.95 for .30-30's and $69.95 for .30-06.
100 rounds of Remington .300 Win Mag's are $94.95 and the .300 Weatherby Mags are going for $159.95 per hundred.

If you stick to muzzleloading and shoot the "Knight 440 grain Hydracon Conical" in your .54, expect to pay Cabela's $133.25 per hundred! (plus shipping, powder and caps of course.) :shocked2:

Powder is the only real thing I worry about. It's almost $17 bucks a lb at the local pawnshop, the only place in town that has it in stock. I thought about placing an order to Powder Inc but with the $33 buck HazMat fee for 5lbs it's hardly worth it and in fact would cost more then just buying local. Since I mostly shoot flintlocks and cast my own balls ignition and projectiles are not really that expensive as long as I can stay in 3fg powder. Of course, my grandsons shoot caplocks so I've got to keep #11's and Musket caps on hand but I did get a good deal on a few hundred Musket caps at Wally World a couple years ago at the end of hunting season. Of course patches are a non-issue since linen or cotton cloth can be had by the yard at Wally World for just a few bucks a yard and you can get a few hundred patches from a yard of cloth. One thing I really love about muzzle loaders, if you look around you can either make or find what you need for a reasonable price.

At Grafs you can get up to 32 lbs for one hazmat fee of $20.00. For quanities between that and 50 lbs, Grafs pays the fee. For 10 lbs, my usual order the total is $129.85 or 12.99/lb. of their private label powder, made by Wano. Goex is about $0.40 a lb higher. I'd sure not deal with someone askin' $33 for a hazmat fee, if I could find someone who'll only charge me $20.

I got my goex from powder inc with the 34 dollar shipping fee (Witch included the hazmat.) the price was 89.00 for 5 poundes of FF or 17.80 a pound:thumbsup: . They may have raised their prices of late but as I can't get powder locally :cursing: :shake: I'll be doing buisness with them agian.
