If you can find a copy of Torsten Lenks book " The Flintlock : its origin and development" there are a lot of rear sights on smoothbores, mostly French/European high end guns from the 17th and eary 18th century
 
I decided that I liked the look and the height of the sight that Coyote Joe fabricated for his smoothbore. I also plan to solder mine on the barrel rather than cut a dovetail. I have a friend who fabricated his out of 1/8" bar stock just as Joe did and it's a pleasure to shoot.
