Just put my first traditions hawkens together and was reading in Dixie Gun Works catalog rhat you should always proof the barrel before you shoulder fire the weapon. Is this really needed? Arent barrels proofed before they are sent out?

Brain is right. To the best of my knowledge, most all production guns and their kits have proofed barrels. The proof marks should be stamped on the barrel. Again, welcome to the forum :hatsoff: .

I may be wrong but I don't think that is needed on modern black powder barrels. The barrels made 200 years ago started as a flat piece of metal that was heated cherry red and forge hammered around a mandrel. This created a seam the length of the barrel, hence the need to proof.

Barrels made in Europe, as is your traditions barrel, are proofed. I think it is a matter of law.

American made barrels may or may not be proofed. Probably not. One would have to inquire of the manufacturer of American made barrels as to proofing.

Not sure about Japanese made barrels.

If that is a Traditions Hawken barrel, it is already proof tested!

And welcome to the best forum on the planet

I don't believe any American made barrels are proofed and I don't know about most imports. They likely have batch testing at the factory as part of a quality check, but, last I knew, the muzzleloading rifles & shotguns we receive from the manufacturers have never been fired. Some may be test fired (custom ones especially) but that's a world different from proofed.

But we're also using better manufacturing methods and steel vs. back when iron barrels were wrapped or wound.
