one time I put a flintlock in a led sled using P pyrodex for the pan and the load. using a stopwatch I was standing with the rifle locked in. pulled the trigger got a good spark then started the stopwatch. the charge finally went off at 42 minutes and 12 seconds. talk about a hang fire. :ghostly:
I had a hang fire like that while Deer hunting. I dropped the hammer on a nice buck at 4:30pm and the hang fire was an all nighter. I left the gun on the log all night and came back the next morning at 6 ---gun went off at 6:30 AM. Missed the buck tho he moved at 6:15. Yep nice Buck too.

ahahhaha. I have allowed for that. I wake up early fire my flintlock of course nothing happens with the pyrodex. I have it timed to get to my stand wait a while until I see a buck aim the rifle and hope it goes off. 🤠

The real issue was not choosing which one, it was a 5 lb minimum order when they only had 1 lb of fffg. I was told that the fffg doesn't draw moisture, so I figured that would be a good prime charge for hunting. Nonetheless, I was able to find fffg locally.
3Fwill do all that needs doing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

WOW! I would have given up on it.

Can o worms, NOW what I have learned do not use Pyrodex in a flash pan no good, the main charge different story pending what camp your wagon is at, also the main reason I stick with percussion Pyrodex works. The main charge is ok the gummy residue left behind if not brushed or rodded well makes difficult follow up shots that flash hole required gets gummed over with pyrodex. But hey you will not catch me regurgitating the same misinformation feed to me.

10 grains 3f down the tube folloewed by 60 gr pyrodex = 70 gr load. NO PROBLEM. While a spark may not set off the pyrodex the 10 Gr black down the tube first will set it off and you wont know the differnce. I used this ALL THE TIME beofre I joined up here and learned I culd get real black via FEDEX. Many still use this method to save on the real stuff and make it last. As per above just get 3F. If not a 12GA or 54 and up yer good to go.

5 years from now, there will be a thread just like this one. Then 5 years after that, and so on. When will people learn?

@Sidney Smith, they will learn right after they load the Pyrodex into their flint lock rifle and it won't fire.

It is sad that real black powder is so difficult to obtain, and after Pyrodex and Tripple Seven have been marketed as excellent substitutes for real black powder (they are not). The substitutes are acceptable in percussion locks, sort of, and generally available at local gun stores when only one pound of powder is desired to experience the firing of a traditional muzzleloading firearm. Even then, it often takes magnum caps and flame throwing nipples.

I rigged my rifle to use dynamite blasting caps for Pyrodex and I still get misfires :dunno:

I use duplex loads all the time in my flintlock and have never had any issues. It is a 48 caliber flinter. I first load 35 grains of GOEX 2f BP, then on top of that is 35 grains of Pyrodex Select (comparable to 2F) I use 4F in the pan. This will extend my GOEX powder for a long time as I'm not planning on buying anymore in the future. That duplex load shoots well. A duplex load of real BP in 3F and Pyrodex P will work just as well and I'm planning on using this duplex load in my .40 caliber flinter. My .32 Crockett will be using straight Pyrodex P. This will probably make people unfriend me or put me in their ignore setting as I shoot a percussion rifle and use Pyrodex.....
