Never knew these existed and ran across them by accident on Hodgdons web page (which is behaving badly for me today…) but found them in stock at Bass Pro/Cabelas —- anyone have experience using these in a Uberti 1860 or similar? I’ve used rifle pellets in the past but didn’t know they made them for pistols. I did snag a few boxes, only way you can beat the blasted hazmat charges these days.

Thanks Karma — sooo, you’re using a conical bullet out of a BP Pistol? I’ve found very little info on doing it this way instead of round balls. I’ve got a 44 caliber mould that I *think* would work nicely in my 1860 Uberti but wasn’t certain. If you didn’t guess I’m VERY new to BP pistols and BPCR, its been too cold here to get to the range but I keep casting and loading…

Thank you!

I tried them way back 10 years or more ago. Too expensive for my blood back then. With loose powder where it is today may be more of an attractive proposition.
The problem with conicals is 1) fitting them under the rammer, 2) having a reproduction pistol with a rammer that fits a sharp nose with out deforming.

Each pistol is different. One will like 15 grains of 3F, some 20gr some 25, some 30gr for best accuracy. The pellets offer one set powder charge and ONLY if you’re lucky will that pellet give your pistol it’s best accuracy. I’ll always stick with 3F and experiment until I find my guns best potential. Plus the pellets are abhorrently expensive.

I purchased a screw top can of these in 2007 and used a few pellets once in a while over the years. They were 30 grain pellets.

I shot the last of them in 2020 in a Uberti 1860 Colt and the Labradar said they were shooting a .454 Hornady ball at 1000 fps.

Pretty good for a 13 year old can of pellets. They are very convenient and fast for reloading. I still prefer real BP.

Thiss is one of the bullets I use quite often. Thee mold is available from accurate molds dot com.

many people are using replica of civil war era conical bullets. I’ve only dabbled with them as the others I cast work very well for me.

They work in an Uberti Remington and are a strong load. They might have some ignition issues due to need for higher ignition temperature required according to what I’ve read.
The spring in the Uberti Remington isn’t as strong as my Pieta version which has lead to double strike cap issues with certain cap brands so that can confuse the ignition issue.

I have a can of them I got several years back. I was not a fan of them, they are easier to load and fired every time. The 3 or so cylinders full I shot not one ball hit near the same place. I was using an 1858 Remington. It shoots loose Pyrodex and Goex accurately. Just my experience with them.
