I've been playing with it on leather. Can't say that my results are that great but then again my hand skills at anything are weak. I think a person who has carving skills would do equally well at pyrography.
A good steady hand is a must and the right tips. I've done a few that look very much like scrimshaw.

Has anyone tried this? I have a cherry SMR stock I would like to embellish but not sure I want to try carving on it.

I have seen a bunch of carved guns that were really cool looking to the owner, turned into an albatross tied around their neck when come time to sell it. Resist temptation to carve, or putting your initials on it.

As promised, here's a piece I did 25+ years ago I was at a rendezvous and saw this elk base/burr that had been broken in its early stages and polished by the elk during rubbing. It caught my attention. I saw something there and I was right. After hours of work, it turned out like this.
