I have 3 barrels for my New Englander and have noticed all have a plug or pin (not sure of proper name) about 1/4” in diameter on the breach plug opposite of nipple. It is flush with breach so I don’t think it’s removable.
What is its function? Thanks

They drill from the back side to make the flash channel for fire from the nipple to reach the main charge then plug it with a screw & grind it flush. And no, it's not removable. They used to do it from the other side & seal it with a small screw & called it a 'clean-out' screw. So many people boogered them up & TC was getting covered up with warranty work to fix them so, they changed sides & made it non-removable.

I believe it covers a hole that was used in manufacturing. TC filled the holes originally with screws but then folks would remove them , get them all buggered up , and send them back to TC for replacement ( great warranty back then!) They then started filling that hole with a harder to remove pin with no slot for a screwdriver.

I think it was from the manufacturing process, they needed to connect the bore to the bottom of the nipple seat.
👍👍👍👍

Thank you. I thought it could have been a cleaning opening as I’ve seen it on other rifles. I appreciate your clarification.
