I’ve had this old flintlock for several years and by researching can determine it dates to 1958. It looks complete and in nice shape, I can send better photos later.
I have to start selling off a large collection of guns and was trying to get an idea of a reasonable asking price for this. All I can find it an estimated value between $800 to $1300 but was looking for some advice. I would really like to see it go to a true collector.
Any suggestions on how to find a collector would be appreciated -

The value you stated would be about right for a Royland Southgate rifle in average condition on the low end to excellent condition on the high end. Southgate was a contemporary maker in the 50's his work while good for the time pales to contemporary makers from the 70's forward. How do you define a collector? Is that someone who only accumulates but does not shoot guns in his collection? Seriously this forums for sale section gives you a good chance to sell the rifle but it will require a good picture presentation.

Some things to be aware of. When you have your posts and time in and relist in the for sale section you need to add to your description. Bore condition, weight, length of pull, has that crack across the toe been repaired, lock condition who pays shipping. Listing that info will answer many of the questions you will be asked.

Thanks so much for the guidance. I expect that my responses to emails posted will satisfy the requirement so I just need to wait a couple of weeks. I will add all that info. The cracks along the tow of the butt stock no repairs and the bore is good. I have a feeling this gun was rarely fired.

Sadly many people today are not even familiar with the name let alone his contributions to muzzleloading shooting sports. When he started good parts were nearly impossible to find. He made his own barrels and often used reworked old original locks, triggers and hardware.

Thanks for the info. It appears to me he did pretty good work. I could see why some would like to have in their collection

I've had a number of his rifles and pistols over the years and as has been mentioned most of his work was pretty crude by todays standards especially the wood work. His barrels were very good but you couldn't just order up a Siler, L&R ect. so locks and triggers ran from pretty good to just fair.

Understood thanks - I guess there still are collectors who value his work regardless

Serial #'s listed in Dixie say in 1958 they ranged 448 - 488. I became a Southgate enthusiast when I saw THOSE TENN MADE 'KAINTUCKS' in the Dad's July 1952 Rifleman. A shame, but $125 was too much for little Jimmy to have a modern muzzle-loader to shoot. I never forgot the Southgate name, and a decade ago I did buy one, # 507. Nice rifle but the pull was too long for me so I let it go. I am/was a shooter, not a collector of Southgate guns.
If I live long enuff I may publish a small book on his work. So, dpavelock, I would like to include a couple of your photos if I may, in this book. Right now it is in Word on my 'puter.

Absolutely you can use in your book - I will definitely want a copy

not sure exactly how to measure the pull but this one is actually pretty short measuring 13in from trigger to inside of my elbow, trigger finger probably about 12in from my eye?
