Wow almost an old topic now.

I ran the dog today field trail.. first time.

I learned more..

I might have to re pattern test the gun to see what ten yards looks like.

I might go less.. not 1.5oz.

#5 1.25oz and 60 65 grns 3f...

I got a gps collar and tried that for the first time.. that worked real good.
I’ve been wondering about what happened to you. You’ve been MIA for a while.

Sounds like you’re getting it nailed down pretty good. Congrats.

I've search around the site a couple times a day maybe.

I kinda belong on the modern site somtimes and I think I've made one post on the modern site total. I had a question but I searched it and got the answer so.

I'm on the modern site everyday also and never find anything.

It was fun.

We are looking into joining a club and getting a puppy.

Everyone wants there own beagle here now.

the hunt season is 5 months you can be hunt training out there.
I don't think I need the club to get a dog trained but it's nice.

A good stock of hunting dog is important, but not absolute. However, all hunting dogs need good training to be the best they can be. This most of the time requires starting them off young while hunting with other well trained dogs. Fortunately, beagles are fairly easy to train and are often naturals. Most will run a rabbit to some degree but when running them with other well trained beagles they learn how to stay on the trail and/or back track if they lose the trail. I had one beagle that would somewhat run a rabbit but ultimately failed as a good rabbit dog. Most any beagle will run a rabbit, but to what capacity they run one can be a different story.

I really enjoyed rabbit hunting with beagles. The bad part is, despite what some beagle owners might say, many beagles will run deer. Not all, but most. I spent the night in my truck one night after my dad’s beagles ran a deer and didn’t come back. Finally, the next morning we found them on a road several miles away. Dad swore his beagles wouldn’t run deer.

Rabbit hunted with my cousin and the beagle got after a deer. The dog was never found.

The last time I rabbit hunted with beagles was with a friend that bragged his beagles wouldn’t run deer. I watched those dogs chase a deer that day.😁
Don’t believe I’d take you rabbit hunting with me if I had beagles. Lol

A new snow on the ground for one full night leaves rabbit tracks. After two nights, the tracks are too numerous and difficult to follow. My favorite way to hunt them is to get to the hunting ground early that first morning. I've most always used a longbow and 11/32 wooden arrows. A 38 case fits over the shaft and can be pinned on with a finishing nail. (I pulled 40 grain bullets from 22LR bullets from the little cases and tapped them into the 38 cases, adding weight. Usually 2 bullets) Find a single rabbit track and follow it ever so slowly thru the snow, constantly scanning ahead for the brown fur sitting still. Often they'd jump before I saw them, but some would not, giving me a shot. Dead ones went in a burlap sack supported by a cord. I have also hunted them that way with my .50 flint long rifle with reduced loads. In youth I used a beagle but getting older I sort of felt bad when the dog pushed a rabbit out giving me a shot. The little fellow got killed because I enlisted help from a dog. He died never knowing I was there waiting. Yep, that's weird of me. With no dog and just the bow I feel like I might deserve the rabbit a bit more.

I went out last weekend but took my daughter so.. she's still young.

We didn't go far. Stayed to the trail. I think we went 100 yards she wanted to stop and have some candy.

This Saturday I'm going to start early.. I'll go just me.. I have to get the dog into these woods it is a little thick.

The beagle has been good.. follows me.. I sit down. It explores all around then comes to me.. then we move further. I sit down and she explored.. it's slow. She works slow. It's nice...

A good dog.

Long day kinda..

Did a good walk the woods. Trying to flush one..

I stopped for chocolate bar water and cigarette.. sitting there a while on the power line
She found one I think.. she took off from me for a little while barking.

I waited where she took off from but she stopped barking after 15 mins. Came back.. I was like that's it? Got away. A mouse maybe.

I've trained beagles when younger. Much fun, and frustration, but good memories. Beagles don't catch rabbits, they just trail them. A dog with a good nose may never see the quarry but they will keep them running in circles while you set up waiting for it to run past. You'll know when they get on fresh scent by their bawl.

The guy I bought the dog from.. he said I might have to take it 6 times to the place for it all to click and all..

I have other places to try. But I know they're rabbit where I'm going so I'm not going to change spots yet.

She has a gps on me anyway.. she's knows where I am. It does seem like she's learning the place. Like first time the trail was a big deal.. now she checks the trail and the woods a little. Etc..

Comes back to me.. follows me.. it's what I asked the guy for.. one that I don't loose.

I'm..
Dp10ga
My Pheasant load is
75grn 3f 1.5oz #5 shot.
I havnt shot a rabbit with that.

I'm thinking less though for rabbit
65grn 3f.. 1.25oz #5...

Is it a big difference.. I was thinking it works just fine down to 1oz loads. Only reason why I think 1.5oz might be a touch to much.

She was really searching this morning good.

two chases.. she took off barking.. seems she lost them both but didn't give up right away and come back.. she dug around in there where she lost track awhile..

I kinda went in after to where she lost them.. it's it is thick right there gets thick..

I noticed a difference today. She worked hard finding them.

My daughter is ready to go now.. she wants to go rabbit... I'm trying to decide on going to a new spot or back to where I was.

I know the dog wants too.. she was a little fresh when I was getting ready to go.. played run away awhile.

Wow that was fun.. big change today. Right when I let her loose begging of the trail. She picked one up started to yip. Then bark then it was going.

She ran one back to me. I missed that thing. That was fun.

I'm headed up the line to where there's another been..

Big cat..

Last time rabbit hunting there was a big real big cat on the side of the trail perched on a rock.

I know you can't shoot them in this zone but I'd have to double check..

I was scared I don't want this thing where I rabbit hunt..

I did hammer back a barrel on the 10ga I beaded on it.. I almost.. but I've also seen an army of wardens show up in the woods on people who have..

These things do somtimes have somtin gps..

I don't know.. you know.. now I worry about my dog..
