I'm building a Lancaster rifle. 42" swamped barrel. How deep is the ram rod channel. And also what are measurements on where the underlugs go.
Thanks in advance.

With the barrel breeched, place your ramrod down the barrel to the face of the breech plug, you will need at least an inch sticking out the barrel. Mark it and measure it, that's how you can figure it out.

There is no "rule" governing placement of underlugs but generally, on a fullstock rifle, the rear lug is placed about 10" forward of the breech, the lug nearest the muzzle about 4-6" back from the muzzle and the third centered between the two.

I like to set the depth of the groove so that the ramrod is not lower that 1/8" below the barrel at the muzzle.

Careful study on lug placement will show that some builders treated it differently than others (southern rifles often have the first lug further aft, for instance). Make sure you are careful with your layout so that you don't have a conflict with the middle pipe.

If a 3/8" dia RR is used, I make the RR channel depth at 5/32" or somewhat less. Some styles of LRs like the Lehighs are a lot shallower than 5/32".

The placement of bbl lugs varies a lot and a prime consideration is that they don't interfere w/ the RR pipes.

The actual RR should touch the muzzle cap...no gap.....Fred

barrel lugs?? 3-4 which ever you want..........
I like 4, and am comfortable in filing and placing barrel lugs~

3 or 4 will work fine.

The guns I've put together were all based on existing guns so I used the same number of barrel pins as the originals did.

Most of them have 3 pins. The Bedford has 4 pins, again, based on photos of the original guns.
